Windows 10 Troubleshooting
This is a stupid question, but I am out of ideas. I've been playing DOW for about 2,000 hours over the years. I just went from Windows 8 to Windows 10. Anyway, DOW GOTY and WA work, but DC and SS don't. The games start up fine and I get through the intro videos and to the title screen, but I can't create a profile in-game with them, so I can't play at all. I can put in a name and press "Create", but it just clears the text without creating the profile. I can only assume this is related to Windows 10.

Does anyone have suggestions? Is there perhaps a text file I can directly edit to create the profile? This is ridiculous- of all the compatibility issues I have seen over the last 25 years, I've never seen something like this (the program running fine but the name input function not working), and it certainly is not my hardware. I can't find anything pertinent online. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I just tested this, by moving my profiles to desktop, so it was as if I was starting from scratch:

1) Go to: steamapps/common/Dawn of War Dark Crusade/Profiles
(If there is no folder titled "Profiles" then create it)

2) Create a folder in "Profiles" named: Profile1

3) Open notepad and type in your profile name (this could be your steam username, or whatever you want)

4) Click File then Save as, and then put "name" as the filename of the file, save it in "Profile1", BUT you must save it as a .dat file, and not the regular .txt format. If you don't know how to do that, when you press "Save as" there is a box under where you entered the filename that is titled "Save as type:" click on the drop down menu of that box and select "All Files", then type ".dat" after "name", so your filename should be "name.dat", after that press save.

I hope this isn't too confusing and that it helps. :steamhappy:

Thanks for the suggestion. It's a great idea, but doesn't make a difference. There must be more to it. I think I will contact whoever presently owns the rights to the games.

Last night I played Solitaire until I fell asleep. I haven't gotten deep into Solitaire since the late nineties.

OK, here's a manual way to create a profile. go to the folder Zack Cyris mentions:
Mine was here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dawn of War Dark Crusade\Profiles\

1. Create a folder named profile1 and go inside it.
2. Create a folder named dxp2 and go inside it.
3. Create a folder named multiplayer and go inside
4. Create a folder named savegames then back out to the profile1\ folder
5. Create a text file named name.dat and edit it with the user name you want. Save it.
6. Create a text file named playercfg.txt and edit it with the following text:
Controls =
{
invertDeclination = 0,
invertPan = 1,
scrollRate = 1,
}
CustomScarVars =
{
hasPlayedTutorial = "",
}
Graphics =
{
ShinyObjects = true,
}
Sound =
{
VolumeAmbient = 0.75000,
VolumeMusic = 0.75000,
VolumeSfx = 0.75000,
VolumeVoice = 0.75000,
}
Tutorial_dxp2 =
{
HasClickedCampaign = true,
HasPlayedTutorial = true,
}
W40k =
{
attack_move_default = 0,
event_cue_toggle_critical = 1,
event_cue_toggle_non_critical = 1,
help_text_level = 2,
persistent_selection = 1,
response_sound = 1,
}
player_preferences =
{
campaign_played_disorder = false,
campaign_played_order = false,
force_name = "Bork'an",
race = "tau_race",
}

You can change anything you want at your own risk.

7. Create a file named teststats.lua and put the following text into it:

GSGameStats =
{
Players = 2,
WinBy = "",
Teams = 2,
player_0 =
{
PRace = "guard_race",
PHuman = 0,
PFnlState = 1,
PTeam = 1,
PName = "Computer 1",
PTtlSc = 120,
},
player_1 =
{
PRace = "tau_race",
PHuman = 1,
PFnlState = 1,
PTeam = 0,
PName = "PorkFat",
PTtlSc = 436,
},
Duration = 201,
Scenario = "2P_FALLEN_CITY",
}

Change anything at your own risk.

Start the game and the profile should be there to start a game with. Do the same with profile2\ profile3\ etc.

This just worked for me exactly

I'm having a similar issue- on the main menu, the cursor will revert to a normal cursor rather than the game's cursor when I hover over "Campaign" or "Skirmish". This keeps me from launching the campaign. All other buttons work fine.

EDIT- I can launch the campaign by being very careful with cursor placement, but there is a perpetual dead spot in the game, which prevents me from selecting certain pieces of wargear, placing buildings on the map, or giving orders to a certain area. Any advice on how to remedy this?

To be honest, no. I never recovered from this and eventually gave up gaming. I have gamed since 1986, and this last year is the least I have gamed in all that time. I can't understand my problem or yours. Neither make sense. Tech support just offers a refund. But I give no ♥♥♥♥♥ about five or ten bucks- I've put at least 1500 hours into the game and love it.

Did you ever find a solution?

Oh, editing the file like was previously suggested did not work, either. But I appreciate the suggestion.

Alternatively: install GNU/Linux. Dark Crusade has been whitelisted for Valve's Proton compatibility layer for Windows games. Runs in one click from steam, works perfectly.

Right click the game in steam library, go to properties --> updates --> uncheck the cloud save option at the bottom then edit the save file as I typed up above.

The cloud save function prevents you from editing local save files.
I have a 1280 x 1024 monitor but it's still just a square

edit: and there is no way to skip the intro movies

edit #2: and I have to reset the resolution every time

edit #3: and loading a campaign crashes the game
