Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade

I believe I've found the perfect Imperial Guard battle strategy.
This strategy is essentially the creeping barrage of WWI and WWII, but instead with Basilisks, Heavy Weapons Teams, and the key unit of this strategy - the assassin.

The Heavy Weapons Team is ridiculously OP when you've got two or three next to it, with all of them upgraded to autocannons. First, you have to use three autocannon HWT's to create a defensive line that, in my experience, practically no light nor heavy infantry can get through. With these three autocannon HWT's being a defensive line, this creates a safe space for the Basilisk and assassin to hide behind.

Now that you have established a defensive line with both a Basilisk and assassin hiding behind, you'll need to use the assassin's scope ability. This will reveal an absolutely tremendous area of the map, and now your Basilisk had targeting info. The Basilisk can fire into the fog of war, but it is very inaccurate while doing so. Your best bet for this strategy to succeed greatly is to use the Earthshaker rounds. They're extremely precise, and can down most buildings in a single shot.

But how will you get anywhere with this strategy? The answer to that one is simple: with the three HWT's that you've used to create the line. You order one of the teams to pack up his weapons, and advance him. While he is advancing, he is not covered by just your other HWT's, but also your assassin and Basilisk. When you've reached the next point you want to defend, you simply tell the HWT you've advanced to set his gun down and fortify. Now the advanc of the other two HWT's is covered.

Once all three HWT's are back in a defensive line formation, you then move up your Basilisk and assassin and repeat the steps outlied above.

tl;dr : Use Heavy Weapons teams to creat defensive line. Set up Basilisk and assassin behind defensive line. Use assassin and Basilisk's special powers in conjunction. Advance defensive line. Repeat.

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention that while using this strategy, I defeated both the Chaos and Necron strongholds by solely using this strategy. I didn't even have to fight that C'tan lord fellow, because as it turns out, the Necron Lord really does not like an Earthshaker round dropper on his head.

What about infiltrators, you'd have to run a psyker or two to make the strategy complete

That's true. I hadn't considered that, because at the time I had only fought against Chaos and Necrons with stunning success. Both of thse factions tend to not have stealthed forces, with the exception of the Cultists. Besides, with the ability to tell the Basilisk where to fire, you can also solve this problem by simply telling your Basilisk to shoot where you suspect the hidden forces to be.

Still though, psykers are relatively cheap so I don't think it would be much of an hassle to produce one or two of them just in case

Not bad, just know this there is not a perfect strategy, yes it is interesting, but I don't think that would help againts Da Boyz or Space Marines, or using Raptors with Chaos or Assault Marines. IG weapon team is good unit for defence and have a great range, but if close combat units come near it like Assault Terminators or Nobz with power claws, than it is bad for poor guardsmen.

Anyway not bad idea, try this one:

Build 2 IG Barrack near the position you are defending, pu infantry inside and behind them(large distance) put Basilisk(1 or 2) and Assasin and one Techpriest to repair Barracks. This helped me againts many difficulties and If enemy is pushing hard include 1 Wepon team with Autocannon near bunkers(Barracks).

P.S. I will try this againts Orks to see how It works, not a bad idea. :)

I haven't personally tested this strategy against Da Boyz, so let me know how it goes! I have a feeling that it'll work great though, due to the Orky reliance on swarm infantry.

In regards to your statement about the shock melee forces, well, no strategy is perfect. In my experience against Chaos (with their Obliterators) my Assassin managed to pick them off before they got to melee range. Not to mention the hail of autocannon rounds my three fire teams were throwing downrange. And the Basilisk.

Also, this is pretty much only useful in single-player levels - in multiplayer, any half-decent player would never give you the opportunity to set up for this (there's a lot of tech-tree progression and expensive units that need paying for), or would otherwise find ways around it.

Yeah Imp Guard is weak against stealth units. Even space marines, early on, are weak against stealth. You need to cap a resource point and then place a listening beacon just to get a sentry skull to gain the ability to counter. It's a shame space marines have to rely on that and not unlock the Auspex scanner that units can use.
