Actually, I remember that a very long time ago they did used to be in teams of three, this was long before the game came to steam though. OP probably had a retail copy originally (you had to download patches off of a website manually I think, no auto updating). I seem to remember relic changing broadsides to be a unit size of 1 in one of their post release patches a few months after the game came out.
It's that, or they're confusing it with a mod like apocalypse I guess.
What I do recall is that the 3 unit squad had huge pathfinding problems. Very often only one unit would entrench while others were walking in circles or doing nothing. I am guessing that this may have been the main reason for the change.
