Raging about the SM stronghold mission
Can I just take a moment to rage how frakkin' ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this mission is, in comparison to the others?

Necrons barely even attack the player's base, so it's just a matter of time to do.

Chaos is just annoying Cultist spam, nothing serious. Same difficulty as Necrons.

Tau are dangerous with the "lose half your army killing the Greater Knarloc, 30 seconds later the AI has a new one" and the "repel enemy attach, regroup/reinforce, go on the offensive, full enemy army attacks from the other direction".

IG are minimal threat once the artillery is gone.

Orks are just a matter of playing defensively until you get the banners within artillery range and reacting proactively to any Looted Tanks with concentrated fire.

Eldar are minimal threat aside from the surprise Wraithlord trio that shows up once the Orks are gone.

SM, however, hit your base 20 seconds in with a huge blob of overpowered infantry with plasma guns, flamers and two Hellfire Dreadnoughts that basically require you to go in with a full honor guard and sacrifice all of them right at the start to stop this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Then let's not talk about them instantly having your base in artillery range right from the start, or how infiltrated units are completely pointless due to a constant stream of Skull Probes rallypointed at your HQ from every Listening Post on your map. Or the huge blobs of Assault Marines with over 20k health and infuriating indecisiveness over whether they're attacking or retreating.

Seriously, absolutely everything about that map has seemingly been designed to make me froth in anger. Anyone else feels the same way?

I assume you got this impression because you attacked this stronghold last, because it's definitely the easiest of them all. The initial attacking force is based on stronghold's strength. Try leaving Tau for last in your next playthrough if you want to see this game at it's hardest (this, plus high level Hyperion Peaks as Chaos).

Honestly I find the Necron stronghold to be the hardest if only because of its loss condition. Some factions like the Eldar and Guard can get out of there easy because of webway gates and garrison teleportation respectively, but others like the space marines and tau don't have an easy way of retreating quickly, making the final phase a lot more troublesome. The issue of having to escort the commander there and ensure he doesn't die is also a real one.

Most other strongholds like the Space Marines and Tau are just unit spam, and that you can deal with a lot more easily as it's really just a case of More Dakka. Sure some factions struggle more than others there, but at least you can use your commander to punch the foe in the face then.

The above poster's point of the strongholds getting harder with strength is also a good one.

I always go with the same order for strongholds: Necrons, Chaos, Tau, ImpGuard, Orks, Eldar, Marines.

Did you bother building any base structures BEFORE attacking? You know you get this choice after conquering the territory with the forward base ability on it! You have nobody to blame but yourself if you don't utilize all your options.

I go into each stronghold battle with a full honor guard and all pre-built structures.

If you attack SM early on (I do it with IG on Hard with the psyker, commissar, bodyguard, and kasrkin) then all you have to do is spam cheap meatshields until you've broken their attack. After that you'll have enough stuff to weather the assaults and launch a counter attack with vehicles. Make sure to attack SM, Tau and Necrons' strongholds earlier on because they are a ♥♥♥♥♥ to try and fight in the later game.
As an Imperial Guard player, I always save space marines for last as it's the easiest. Dig in for the first rush, and raid the orbital control. As soon as you get scanner you can make them kill themselves...

Or just use the basilisks and "make them breathe fire"

Necron lord attacking Imperial Guard base. Easiest stuff ever. Use a Necron Lord Destroyer on the basilisk and their ability to hit everywhere works for you too. Just earthshake the HQ.

It gets better. Just possess two of the Basilisks using your Lord Destroyers, then save and load the game. You'll be able to select the Lord Destroyers again, but the Basilisks will still be possessed. Rinse and repeat until every Basilisk is yours.

Did you mean to just repeat him?

Even easier with the Bugfix mod. Just teleport the Necron Lord close enough to the HQ to trigger the final dialogue and the mission ends instantly due to a scripting bug. :3
