Tips on tau
I seem to be fighting well with all others in the campaign but not with tau. Any tips on best troops and etc also what wargear in the late game?

Start by getting 2 honour guard Fire Warrior squads. Pick the Jetpack as first Wargear. Then attack the Space port. Don't bother turtling and building a large base, as there are three CPUs on it, send Stealthsuits and the Commander to search for Servitors (Jetpacks research mandatory). Then get attack the Eres Badlands (fury bonus). After it, go for Kroot Hounds and Stealtsuit honour guard. As for Wargear, get the Missile pods and Plasma rifle ASAP (after the jetpack), and when you have those and have completed these steps, hit Hyperion Peaks (forward base). With two attacks each turn and access to any territory except the strongholds, you shouldn't have a hard time. This tactic works on Hard difficulty.

Try and skip the Fusion Blaster wargear by using 2 unlocks at once to go straight to the Plasma Rifle, as this means you won't be compromising your range and infantry killing power. If you really want your Commander to be capable of anti-vehicle but don't have enough unlocks to get the Plasma Rifle, go with Missile Pods. If you combine these with a Stealth Field you can sometimes solo entire bases with just the Commander, provided you're wary of staying out of range of detectors, and especially if you're playing on Easy or Normal due to the health bonuses.

Do you mean the fire guard squads that are honor guards?

Yes. Unlike regular Fire warriors, they can fire on the move over a great range. Kroot Hounds and Snares to keep melee units away from them or from fleeing.

also is plasma rifle really worth it? or is the flamer and jet pack more reliable?

On easy and normal, with two fire warrior elite honor guard squads, you can dominate most maps without much effort. This is due to the fire warrior honor guard's extended range. Using pathfinder squad to spot for them, you can eliminate most threats before they can get a shot off. The pathfinder squad has a much larger visual range and can thus effectively reveal targets that your fire warrior elite squads can mow down without them realizing they are being attacked until it is too late.

This does not work with standard fire warrior squads though becasue they do not have the extended range.

Also, as stated previously, grabbing eres badlands and then the pavonis space port will lead to a nearly game breaking advantage of being able to move to any non-stronghold region, twice per turn. It basically means you will have almost no need to spend planetary requisition on local troops, instead focusing on honor guard units.

For the tau commander, the flamer is less effective because of it's meager range. The plasma cannon has such a long range that the tau commander can destroy base buildings without being hit. When you include the stealth option, and the missile launcher option, he becomes a single unit wrecking crew.
