You can zonk from not too far in reaction, slide, try some jump in or maybe even f hk (no sure this last one).

I'm learning Cody as well and also have faced the same problem, with Ryu and Gouken.

If the guy is far away, just jump closer. Once in jump range, don't jump in, since he will be expecting it. Use the slide (cr + MK) or the "Bingo" (hold P) to get through the fireball and get in close range.

focus dash throw or block

dude, you don't even block. I was free to do whatever I want, you didn't even try to punish anything. Work on your anti-air game, also work on defense, and learn how you can punish this move, or that move... get FA Tool (android). yeah.

Analyze the way he's throwing fireballs. If he's spacing them poorly and he doesn't pause every few to see if you jump, read a bad fireball and jump it to punish hard.

I main Cody and Zonk is probably the single strongest tool you have against Ryu's fireball. Punish a few fireballs on reaction with it, and any player that actually thinks will stop throwing them. Then you can get close and do what Cody does best.

Personally, I always hold fierce down so I can still AA with b.mp if Ryu jumps at me.

Play lamer than him. All the Ryu players I played don't seem to know that there are buttons besides the right shoulder button. .

Cody cannot beat Ryu in the projectile war, he can only throw rocks for a bit before he either has to block, forced to jump or focus.

Anyway with cody you want to walk into cr.mk range and hold zonk charged, using hp zonk is the best option has you don't need hp from that distance. Release zonk once you see a fireball.
Zonk is by far cody his best option against most projectiles.

From further ranges you can use your own projectiles, the light stone has the fastest recovery and works great if opponent fals into a fireball pattern. This allows you to build some meter however this is not a tactic to rely too much on.

ANother tool from further range is EX ruffian. EX ruffian has to be used early or in anticipation to go through projectiles. Again try to recognize the patterns. You have to use it around max range otherwise it's too difficult to use on reaction.

Cody has an extremely good forward dash and combined with focus it actually allows him to dash even further. Make use of that. Don't overuse focus dash from cloer ranges when Ryu has meter as a EX fireball will surely come. Want to use it from around fullscreen and dashing in with zonk so you cna go under the enxt fireball and punish. You can also use ex ruffian or U2.

Basic answer EVERYONE has is jumping. If you are in range to connect a jump attack, then try to ANTICIPATE with a jump, do NOT react to the fireball. The reason is that Ryu then will almost always have recovered and can still uppercut. Recognize fireball patterns to get the timing down. Another jump distance is jumping from further away without any attack in the air. There is a range where if you press an attack like jumping hk it'll connect and if you don't press the hk in the air and Ryu does an uppercut... it'll miss. This is important as you want to make the Ryu player hesitate when anti-airing. This allows you to approach more easily as Cody. Last tactic is to neutral jump projectiles. Whenever you jump over a fireball Ryu has to wait before being able to throw a firebll again and you didn't give up any ground at all, so you can wal forward slightly. When blocking or focusing attacks Ryu can throw another projctile immediately.Neutral jumping underutilized by beginners, it is an excellent tool that almost every character can employ.

U2, biggest punish to projeciles you can get. Eventhough it looks to have massive range... it doesn't. Go into training and see from how far it'll connect. Too far and only the dust portion will connect while rest of the ultra will miss. You want to buffer the motion of U2 at ranges you can react to the fireball and the full utra will still connect. You can mask the buffering of the motion with cr.lp for example or during forward dashes

So to summarize:
-Jumping(please do read my post about this in the upper portion)
-Zonk(use hp zonk)
-Focus
-EX Ruffian
-U2

*Ignore the posts that say c.mk, this only works against fireballs that go high such as Gouken, Rose etc

Cody has a lot of ways to deal with projectiles however they all require either doing them in anticipation or having good reactions. Zonk is easiest and most reliable way, it makes or breaks this matchup.
