New to SSF4, using Evil Ryu. Tips?
I've played for a month now and I'm starting to button mash in a more strategic way. I started playing Evil Ryu as I love his axe kick. Any techniques I should use while learning to play?

So far I...
-Punish players who jump with a Light Shoruyken or a Crouch HP.
-Poke at a distance with Projectiles.
-Not jumping a lot since it is punishable.
-Not spamming Ultras, and Special moves.

Also, when I do arcade mode, I always get wrecked by Seth. I play on Easy to Medium Hard and it seems that it is only Seth that I have troubles with.

Keep in mind you're playing one of the lowest health characters in the game... very little room to make mistakes.

Evil Ryu gets a lot of damage from his crouching medium kick canceled into fireball. If you know how to do FADC combos he can take off 1/3 of the opponents health for just 2 bars of meter. Since you are still learning that might be too difficult right now, but learning to properly space cr.Mk->fireball is still a very useful skill to learn. (basic play for all shoto characters)

Oh and also IMO playing against the computer is not that useful since it kinda teaches you bad habits that won't actually work vs human players. Good for practising punishes though, just remember to un-learn certain things when you go online :)

And don't worry about getting distroyed by boss Seth, he actually "cheats" since he has much more health and stuff than the real selectable character. I think he also reads your inputs like the old SF2 Turbo arcade AI did, which is pretty BS :)

play dan to get your shoto mastery.
then play evil ryu and see how good you get, just from that.

Ah thank you. Must explain why I could beat Seth in Versus. I just started doing the cr.Mk->Fireball and it's really useful. cr.Mk helps a lot with spacing.

This tip was helpful! I started putting myself in situations I don't want to be in and I won 3 matches in a row.

Oh yeah something I forgot to mention: watching good players can really teach you a lot about how a character can be played. I'd recommend checking youtube for players like Sako or PR Balrog to see their style of play. Even if you can't do the fancy combos they do you can still learn a lot about spacing and when to attack/defend.

Here's a nice set with Sako, one of the world's top Evil Ryu players:

I would suggest not to play evil ryu as a first time character, he has low health and if you cant use his combos he is not worth it. I would suggest first to see all Vesper Arcade SF4 tutorials and play an easier character like ryu to learn the basics. After you learn how to use "links" into combos then spend a lot of time on training combos with e.ryu and then go online.

Sorry if i dissapoint you but SF4 despite being the best fighter, it has a steep learning curve and needs lots of dedication and training mode so you wont get bodied online.

Evil Ryu is not really Beginner friendly. His combos can be pretty long and hard to execute. If you cannot do his FADC Combos to fully capitalize on the damage, then it makes no sense in using him. He really depends on it since he has not much health. Try the following combo:

cl.st.HP cancel into m.Axe kick link into cr.m punch cancel into light hurricane kick and juggle with hard punch shoryuken.

This is a basic combo and you need to be able to do this combo properly. It is used in FADC combos as well.

For gameplay footage, you should definitely check out Sako and Pr Balrog.

I'd also recommend checking out Wao's E. ryu. He switched to him recently from Oni and is probably one of the most patient E ryu players I've ever seen.

I've been using half matches as Ryu and half E. Ryu. I don't know if this is an effective strategy, but many of the combos and trials with Ryu I can use with E Ryu.

You can play him like ryu if you want. Thats what I do and I can do some basic combos and end up doing about as good with him as I do with ryu. Evil ryu has a much greater difficulty if you want to get good with him though. Those fadc combos are very difficult.

Yeah, but then he's just normal ryu with less health.
HARDCORE RYU!!!
now all we need is an evil dan, replete with one hit KO raging demon ultra that can only be landed in the rarest of circumstances, has no I-frames upon startup, and ends with a flaming 父 on his back.

In the Ultra version coming up, doesn't he get buffed in health so he's only 50hp lower from Ryu (950 vs 1000), aka less than a single hadoken worth of damage?
