Would most fight sticks also double well as mame controllers?
i figure the title asks it all. i'm thinking about going fight stick, but i'm really new to the game and i'm not sure whether i'll actually stick with it long term....though, there are other fighters i do play from time to time and stuff like mkx on ther horizon. but mostly i figure i could use it for mame emulator stuff for more of that good old arcade feel

Yeah you can your stick for anything that doesn't require 2 sticks to play. Personnally I like using my stick for fighters, 2D platformers, arcade games, musical games, you can even use it as your mouse and go on the internet and stuff.

I think an arcade stick is a great investment even if you don't play fighting games much. I play as many 2d games as I can using one, since hitting arcade buttons is way more satisfying than pressing buttons on a controller. I've played games like Spelunky and Valdis Story on my arcade stick and it worked great.

Just remember that if you do get a stick, you're gonna get your asskicked for like a week while you relearn muscle memory

I use my fightstick for arcade like games also. I used it for the scott pilgrim game too. Any arcade like game is perfect for it.

Playing shoot em ups like Tyrian 2000 (which is free), stuff like Mega Man on emulators and other arcade style games on an arcade stick is just good old fashioned fun.

Beat em ups, shoot em ups and fighting games as well as old school platformers are the only genres the stick is a lot of fun with though.
So if you hate these genre maybe you shouldnt buy one.

You'd be literally Hitler though if you don't like these genres.

the 8 button layout would probably be best. fightsticks with the mortal kombat layout are very limiting.

oh wow i didn't know mk used a different layout. is that even better for mk?

Sadly different arcade games used different types of sticks. Most American games used a hexagonal gate instead of the Japanese square gate that you find in fight sticks. This can make things a little annoying in the sort of games where you actually need to click diagonals as much as the main 4 directions. Also fight sticks are flat out horrible for games that used a 4 way stick like Donkey Kong. You will just wind up stuck in the corners of the gate when you try to make quick changes from up/down to left/right when going up and down ladders. The circle gate of most gamepads is actually much better for those games as you can easily slide the thumb stick from right to up without getting stuck in the diagonal.

I would still recommend the fightstick though. It will work fine for half of mame and it's the best way to play fighters. Sure you can always find a high rank player that stubbornly sticks with the gamepad but fighters were designed for stick, the controls haven't changed since the arcade days, and you're just making things harder on yourself trying to avoid it.
