how did you decide on your main character?
I've played ae for close to a year now and to this day still don't know what character I want to main
I always find that I like certain strengths of a character but dislike the weaknesses so I pick one that covers those weaknesses but then he has a whole new set of weaknesses and it ends up being a spiral
how did you decide on your main character?

Chose Ken in the First SF, the 1987 one. Since then i main him throughout the years. It has nothng to do with strenghts and weaknesses, but the connection with the charachter that i've been building all these years. I guess i'm not helping but what i want to say is, pick one that you identify with or that has a style that you like, like you said they all have strong and weak points so it will be very difficult for you to choose based on this alone.

I was using Ken until I saw Daigo beating everybody with style on youtube, and that was the moment I decided I want to play this character..yeah. When I get to B+, I tried to learn other characters, not to cover bad matchups just the ones i'm comfortable with.. I can play like 10 chars now) That's too many, I know.. but as long as im having fun its alright i guess. Im no tournament player, so.. who cares?

Your main character is one you like despite their strengths or weaknesses. One that you're naturally drawn to. I'll use myself as an example.

I main Seth, Blanka & Gouken (in order of preference). I'm trying to add E.Ryu, Bison and Cody to that list. I tend to choose characters based on how fun they are and how easy to do their combos but with not too much difficulty. At the same time, I like characters that deal lots of damage or have one tiny "unfair" advantage or the other.

Seth - Unblockable SPD and insane pressure,
Gouken - Counter ability and demon flip grab, lots of damage, really fun corner combos
Blanka - forces your oppoent to play patiently and has cool rythmic1f link combos,
E.Ryu - cool combos, insane damage and stun output,
Bison - trollish S.Hk and cool rythmic combos,
Cody - same as E.Ryu

It's entirely up to you. Just choose a character that gives you the most satisfaction when you use'em.

I'm not really an old hand at fighting games, so when I decided to start playing a year ago I had a friend who's experienced with the game help me go through a list of the characters. I settled on Dhalsim, even though I know he's balls hard to start with, but I knew that was the type of playstyle I wanted and I haven't been disappointed. After a while I've branched out into Sagat a bit, but Dhalsim is still my main. I just like the analytical defensive game.

Art style, may seem superficial but whatever. Playing what you like is all that matters.

I main Blanka, mostly because I like his animalistic style and his moveset. I totally recognize his weaknesses though many probably do not, but I still find him really fun to play. I've also recently started to get serious with M. Bison (dictator) and Ryu. I know Evil Ryu is technically probably better for USF4, but there's something about Ryu that I like. For one, he has a MUCH better super.

I felt exactly like you blank.
Then i just said "i'm italian, i'll use the only italian character in the game".
So after this i just forced myself into training i started to actually like her.

Also, go check the character's background. If you like his story, you are gonna more likely main him/her.

Are you talking about Blanka? He is from Brasil and not Italy,Rose is from Italy.

The frist SF I played was SF2,there I had ever played Ken,he was ever the great Charakter I liked and played but then SSF2 comes out.
Since there my favourite was Cammy.I played her in every Game where she was in the Cast.SFxX-Man,Alpha3,CVS2,MVC2,SF4 now in AE and in Ultra too. There is no other Charakter in the hole cast that makes so much Fun to play. And no one will take ever her Place away.

But shes not alone I have 2 other Chars I really like and play.
The first one is Rolento,he was ever one of this Charakter that was fun to play.
Pogo Mixups,Jumps across the hole Screen,Grenades.Every time I had play him I sayed befor:Take no Prisoners! I'm so happy that he is in Ultra.

So like everyone I was waiting for the 5th Charakter in Ultra, there was a bund of Charakters I was waiting for.Sarai,Luwanda, one of the Dolls.Well I got what I wan't,but I had never imagine that they will really pick Decapre for this.I was happy, the first Doll since Juni and Juli in Alpha3.
I played her allready on the PS3 and I have to say, dame this is a freaking great Charakter.
She has the same strong and fast Gameplay like her Sister, with great Mixups good dmg and a high Combopotenzial.Seriously its really great,if you deal the Opponent 350dmg without using Meter.

I first used Ibuki in super for a few months when i learned the game, however as i had no fundamentals i could never get in to land anything, quit and dropped the game. When AE released i got back into the game and try Cody. Cody is very straightforward, as easy beginner links, anti-airs, good normals but bad wakeup(better in USFIV). So i was forced to learn how to block properly and anti-air. I could gradually learn links from beginner to very very advanced as Cody has them all. He had no mashable reversals then so i really had to pick my spots to release EX Zonk and just overall good blocking.

However i mainly picked Cody because of his style of play and design, such a laid back attitude. Cody is generally considered a slow character however i loved how you could absolutely overwhelm people with frametrap upo frametraps and make him seem so fast and fluid while dealing massive counterhit damage and stun. Momochi was definately an inspiration when i learned him.

Fast forward i picked up Guy next. I really liked being in people's face and press buttons and getting counterhits, Guy is basically the epitome of in your face style and frametraps. And he was another character not heavily used which i liked.

I wanted to learn Yun when he was released in AE but EVERYONE used him, so i kinda got demotivated. I still liked the character though, and as a former skateboarder i liked his intro. In AE2012 i picked him up when everybody dropped him haha. Yun had solid meterless revrsals which my other 2 characters didnt have, built in frametraps into his BnB's. Huge amount of chains that are safe. Blows people up for crouchteching(love that!!) and can easily bait/stuff dp mashers on wakeup. His mobility allows him to get in without much effort. Also with previous character, Cody didn't have invincible anti-airs so sometimes people could just jump in. WIth guy he did have his amazing cr.mp but best one was his ex tatsu which required meter. Yun has one of the best anti-airs in the game with his light and EX upkicks. Lastly i really like Yun his style that resembles bajiquan like Leo in Tekken.

I just learned to work around Cody his weaknesses and try not to put myself in those situations he's is weak at and find unorthodox ways to get out. For instance Cody his forward dash is amazing and allows him to dash under some jump in setups and get out. Also using extensive options selects to beat backdashes and teleports and certain reversals.

Well I also don't feel an incredibly tight connection with any one character, and even tho I can like a character a lot I still get bored playing one character for more then an hour, so I just play whomever I feel like, I know how to play a lot of charcters.

And yeah im mediocre at best with most of em, and yeah it's kinnda gonna slow your improvement a lot from just having one main, but I just play to enjoy myself and have fun, this is what's fun for me so this is what I do, so don't worry too much about finding that *perfect* main you'll never get bored off, just play what you want.

Those with no mains are usually jack of all trades master of none, which I am unafraid to say that I am one of them. I play the whole cast (yes all of them including the new ultra characters) with some basic to medium level of understanding. Just play what you feel like playing for the day.

I started out playing SFA2 on GGPO , and playing against other people really opened my eyes, all this time i just button mashed or played against the AI.

On SFA2 my main was at first Bison, because i loved his lvl1 scissor kick supper, it had like zero frame startup and i loved to pull it out when getting pressured.
Then i moved on to Adon, because i was practicing CC (custom combo) combos, and also because adon's stage theme is badass!!.
Then moved to Sodom and I learned a lot about graplers, sodom's SPD did a mini-jump, which evaded lows and grabs, it was fantastic, also, after lp SPD, just like t-hawk in sf4, sodom had strong mixups on knockdown, sodom was awesome.

Finally, I ventured and went in big, and moved to Gen, his music theme, stage, combos, quotes, I loved everything about him, he fitted my playstyle more than any other character.
I like to have a lot of options and versatility while fighting (having 2 styles and 12 different normals) and also I love to show-off with stylish combos, because when I pull them off, I feel awesome and get hype.
for that reason Sako is my favorite player. He may not win all the tournaments, but he always gives a good show, and that's what counts for me.

Anyway, all that was about SFA2, in SF4 i main Gen, because what i stated above, and I also play with Dudley, Guy, Hakan and Adon, looking foward to play rolento and hugo in usf4.

I have two years and three months since I returned to play SSFIV, I started playing on consoles and my main character was Cammy but I wasn't good enough, now I am playing on PC and when I started I tried various characters, I tried Juri first but was the same thing like when I tried Cammy, then I tried Ken and Sakura and again I was too bad using them, I though Dhalsim would be my main character but I was wrong lol I had endless matches using those characters and I sucked, I ranked Juri and Ken to 2000k, Sakura to 4000k and Dhalsim to 6000k but if you ask me, I did it fighting people worst than me xD sometimes, beating the same player over and over lol

When I was fighting high players I always got bodied xd I was about to quit and don't play SSFIV again, but one day I tried Chun-Li and gosh finally! I got my main character xd I am not a high skilled player, but I have been practicing hard with Chun-Li and to date, I don't suck like before, at least I can handle some high skilled players and sometimes I win, I have 7 months using her and I have learned a lot of tricks, also I am learning how to use Blanka, he is a good character too.

Don't give up man, I am sure you will find your character ; )

i started out playing as a kid, my brother was always ryu so i would be ken by default. i hated ken as a character and loved ryu and whenever i played in arcades and other stuff id be ryu to be like my brother also i guess. but as i recently got back into playing, i realized even as a kid all i wanted to do was rushdown and do mixups (especially safe jumps). ive also realized ken is more fun in st, 3s and 4. i still hate him as a character but yolo
