What do I need to watch 3D bluray?
Hi,

I have a few bluray in 3D at home, I never watched them in 3D because I never got a 3D TV, but now with the HTC Vive and this app, any way to watch them in 3D?

And what will I need for that? First, of course, I guess I need to buy a 3D bluray player for my computer. And then? Should I need a special app to watch them? Free? A paid one?

And anybody has tried that and what is the experience in 3D watching with blurays?

Thanks

Nope. You need hdcp compliant on the playback device. Blue rays rules. Vive not hdcp

Kind of weird they did not add HDCP support for VIVE. I never realized that.

So in fact I have to rip my blurays for that?

I think there will be DRM issues with most Bluray players that prevents Bigscreen from showing your screen in VR

Yeah rip your blu-ray and convert it to another "high quality" HD fomat like DIVX or something. Here is a site where you can get some apps if you don't have any but always beware what you click and use the freeware ones if you want free but again read carefully. Free-to-use doesn't always mean free for life. http://www.free-codecs.com/software/dvd_backup.htm

Where can I download free 3D videos to check how it works with the vive? As I had a part of the lord of the ring 3D, but dunno why, the 3D is painful for the eyes. So before buying a bluray drive, I would like to be sure it worth the purchase...
Thanks

YouTube should have some. Just download Realplayer and download videos with that for testing. That is the safest or you can go to a site like this but I don't like randomly finding videos on the net >>> http://www.stereoscopynews.com/references-links-books/3d-videos/1633-3d-movies-trailers.html

Realplayer? Why realplayer? Because it allows youtube downloading?
Thanks

Yeah it allows downloading from several types of sites. For testing/review purposes I am sure there is no problem with copyright issues as we consumers are allowed to use content for testing purposes. At least that is how I understand the rules. It is called Realtimes now not realplayer but you can doenload older versions but I am not sure how the downloader will work in the older apps.

I don't know how Bigscreen Beta works with that. I don't really watch movies with my VIVE although I have just played around doing so. I know with other VR Video players you can watch straight from YouTube but some you have to download them to have smoother play. Streaming in VR can be quite annoying and jittery.

Guess depends on your connexion, also the resolution of the video. I was able to watch the star citizen gamescom video straight from youtube in 1080p without any issue. Though not a 3D video :)

You don't need to do this. You can just watch videos straight on Youtube.com without downloading files. If you have a fast enough internet connection to play the video on Youtube, you'll be able to watch it in realtime in Bigscreen without any jittery frame drops.

Indeed I was able to watch 3D SBS videos on youtube without issue.
So I guess the lord of the rings movie I have is bad encoded, not normal the 3D hurt my eye that much... or maybe it is VLC that is not very good for that purpose... or maybe the video is too heavy, therefore I may have difficulties watching it, and if the fps is not good enough, then it creates weird behaviour...
