Virtual Desktop focus is just you and new ways to see your desltop..
Bigscreen is a chat room where your destop is shared with the other users and has more in common with a game...
Note if you have Rift there will be a change in the Rift opening menu that will make it much more like Virtual Desktop
Virtual Desktop's interface is more technical. It has the tools and settings on a single window, and you just check the boxes, or sliders you want. It's single user only, but it's more stable. And the graphics are a little sharper.
When I want to get something done in VR, I use Virtual Desktop.
When I want to hang out with others in VR, I use Bigscreen.
And I agree, with the small change that things like Rift (and SteamVR) are running thier own Virtual Desktop starting in december with DASH:
