Valve Index losing tracking with Bigscreen - screen going gray
I tried this game about a year ago with no issues, but trying it now and my headset starts to lose tracking immediately after I launch the game, causing a gray screen. My headset is working flawlessly with every other game.

Fixed it.

For those with the same issue, try changing your motherboard's PCIE settings to Gen 3 on the BIOS, it seems like it's a possible issue for those on Gen 4. This thread can be closed now.

Are there any downsides to my computer if I were to do this?

I was having tracking issues with Bigscreen and my Oculus Rift. No other VR apps causing me issues, just this one. The Bigscreen Discord helpers gave the same advice as here - if you get these issues and you have a 30 series Nvidia card or a 6000 series AMD gfx card installed, swap the PCIE lanes from Auto to gen 3 in your BIOS. I did this and it instantly fixed my Bigscreen issue. I'll run some general benchmarks later, but I suspect theres no overall difference in gfx performance.

Unlikely, most people won't saturate that amount of bandwidth.
See https://www.techcenturion.com/pcie-3-vs-pcie-4 or https://youtu.be/zxGqGCtPxn4?t=521 for some discussion on that.

Are you working on a fix? This seems to still be an issue.

This is a hardware/driver issue, and not something that we can fix on our end.

Different games have different requirements. With Bigscreen, you are doing more than just playing a game, as you are also capturing your desktop screen and audio, and streaming that, which requires more data to be transferred over your PCI-e lanes in addition to the usual workload that running a VR game puts on your system.

It's my guess that since PCIe 4 is so new, the drivers for interacting with it aren't as mature as gen 3 and are causing issues when a program such as ours needs to transmit so much data over the PCIe lanes.

As noted earlier, in almost all cases, switching to Gen 3 shouldn't make any noticeable difference in performance. (We're not saturating PCIe Gen 4 or even Gen 3 lanes, but we are using more than most programs would.)
