When I do this, the controller's config stays the same - that is, it never adopts the configuration for the game I launch.
That local export is really the only thing you can do to get what you want. Eh, at least there's a workaround.
I should mention though (and I'm not sure if this has already been addressed) that if you use any touch menu's in your steam configuration, it pops up and just stays there stationary. It still works - I can still USE the menu and the function I want happens when I move my thumb and click the area that I want it to happen in. But, it doesn't visually show your thumb moving to the shortcut at all... It's just a static image. It won't go away when your thumb leaves the touchpad either. I have to press the steam button to make it go away (which brings up VR Big Picture mode, which I have to press the steam button again to get out of... actually, double-pressing the button is better in this case because it activates the camera and I don't have to wait for anything to load. Double-press to open camera, double-press to turn it off, back to the game... still a bit of a nuisance though).
Tested that both inside and outside of big screen, and it only happens in big screen. This likely hasn't been noticed yet because rocket league doesn't have a level of complexity that really warrants a touch menu for functions ;) (I was testing with skyrim)
First I'd recommend going into Big Picture (BP) mode with the SC and from there start Bigscreen Beta which launches SteamVR. To launch Bigscreen you have to use mouse as SC's A-input won't popup the launch options (Vive/Oculus mode). Also I found that starting SteamVR first before going into BP can sometimes prevent BP and SC working properly (SteamVR BP mode?).
After a while you'll see Bigsreen and the bubbly BP background - click on it to get back into BP. Now you can use BP with the SC and hopefully the game you're about to play works with Bigscreen+Big Picture+Steam Controller.
- Some games work well just as you'd expect with a custom SC config (e.g. Mad Max and it runs smooth as butter).
- Some games may completely break SC input (Dark Souls 3).
- Some games ignore Bigscreen completely and some crash!
Also, the Steam button will not bring up the BP overlay during a game so be sure to adjust controller configuration beforehand.
In any case, this works!
