Full SBS
Hello, is it planned to support Full SBS videos in the future? This would make the 3D quality much better.

What do you mean by full SBS? Bigscreen already supports SBS videos. Just start playing one, on the big screen and press the SBS button under 3D modes on the screen customization section of the control tablet.

Bigscreen will then properly show the each half of the video to the appropriate eye in your VR headset. The quality of the actual 3D effect will depend on how good the source is.

Hi Peregrine,

Full SBS, means you transmit both views at full resolution.

For Example:

Half-SBS = (960+960) 1920 x 1080p
Full-SBS = (1920+1920) 3840 x 1080p

i think at the moment Bigscreen only supports Half SBS

If your video source is at full SBS, and your monitor can display it, then Bigscreen can do it.

I'm having the same issue. I just followed some tutorials on turning my 3d bluray into an mkv file to play in big screen. I selected fullscreens sbs so that I would have the best version of the movie. Unfortunately the sbs is not lining up correctly. My half sbs files work correctly but are half the resolution.

Skybox VR plays these fine. Is there a reason big screen doesn't? It can't be my index or monitor resolution if it works in skybox.

I have the identical issue as well (Vive Pro). All of the same videos display as expected in Skybox.

I just tested a full SBS video myself and it worked perfectly for me. Are you using the videoplayer?
Hannah Brotana Jul 6, 2020 @ 3:15pm
I am, yes. If I set 3D to off, the SBS file shows normally as 2D, but with SBS on it looks like I'm essentially getting the left half of the screen in the left eye and the right half in the right eye.

And this for certain a SBS file, and not a OU one? We did have an issue with OU being inverted that we just fixed recently. If it is SBS, have you tried testing with other SBS files to make sure it's not just something with this one file?

Thanks for the response. It is SBS although I tried ripping one to OU after seeing the fix and I get a similar result, just upper/lower half in each eye rather than left/right. I am new to 3D conversions so I'm using BD3D2MK3D with default settings other than unchecking the half box to get full SBS. I have tried half as well however, and converting to 720 SBS, both with the same result. I get that with all of about a dozen of my own files, all created the same way.

That said, I tried a couple of the SBS sample MKV files here (https://kodi.wiki/view/Samples) and those DO work in 3D SBS in Bigscreen just fine for me. So it must be something with my conversions, just seemed odd that they worked in Skybox. Appreciate the suggestions either way, thanks!

I had the same problem converting mkvs from 3D blurays in full-SBS or full-OU format using BD3D2MK3D and Bigscreen, plays with Skybox just fine. To make it work with bigscreen delete the --frame-packing 4 option from __ENCODE_3D.cmd and the "--stereo-mode", "0:3" option from __MUX_3D_OPTIONS.json before starting the __ENCODE_3D_LAUNCHER.cmd

For the Bigscreen devs, here is a small Full-OU sample which is not displayed correctly with the Bigscreen videoplayer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwxFVkl63-lETWMzM1dRZF9XMDA/view (8th sample from here: https://kodi.wiki/view/Samples)

What it sounds like you guys actually would want, (and I've been hoping they would add) is 3D MVC support. That's the native format of 3D blu-rays and has full resolution. They should be able to support it the Video Player where everyone in the room has to have the same file but I guess it would be tricky to support it in desktop streaming mode since it interacts with a 3D display directly rather then outputting a 2D SBS image that Bigscreen then converts to 3D.

You can get a full quality SBS image working in Bigscreen but you have to be running your display in 4K *3840X2160* and the left/right frames of the SBS file need to be warped so that if you have a 16:9 *1920x1080* video, each side of the conversion needs to be 8:9 *1920X2160*. In other words if your full quality rips are coming out in ultrawide format you did it wrong. Also, unless Bigscreen eventually supports 4K desktop streaming, guests would still see it at HSBS quality.

@Julian

The clip you have linked is a MVC file, not OU. To get full quality in Bigscreen with OU you would want the whole video to be 3840x2160, with the top and bottom frames each being 3840x1080.

Some quick info since I think there's a couple people here confusing MVC for Full SBS/OU. The way SBS and OU works is by squishing the left/right frames together into one 2D image, hence "Side-by-Side" or "Over-Under". Your 3D TV/projector (or in this case Bigscreen) is then responsible for stretching each eye back out and displaying them in 3D. A MVC file will just play like a regular 2D movie if it can't interact with a 3D display through the player you're using. I don't think MVC support has been added to Bigscreen's video player and desktop streaming on Bigscreen can't play MVC in 3D because it's capturing your screen and not actually interacting with the video file. You could use MPC-HC with MadVR and LAV filters to play a MVC file in SBS or OU if you'd rather have the full quality files but want to be able stream them in Bigscreen. Again though, that method will only be full quality if you're using a 4K monitor and guests will still see it at half quality. For the sake of compatibility with PLEX and other video players, I keep everything HSBS.

Also having problems with full-SBS videos (3840x1080). Bigscreen only displays the left half in NON-3D mode, and when enabling the SBS it just overlays the first half of the left eye and the second half of the left eye. It's as if Bigscreen doesn't recognize video sizes larger than 1920p horizontally.

I'm not sure about Bigscreen's Video Player but if you're streaming your Desktop, all Bigscreen does for SBS is show the left half of your screen to your left eye and the right half of the screen to your right eye. A full-sbs video should actually be 3840X2160 (16:9) since each side will be squished horizontally to fit into one 16:9 frame. If your ripping your 3D movies as two 1920x1080 frames sbs in one ultra wide video it's not going to display properly because Bigscreen is going to automatically stretch each side out horizontally.

If the SBS you were making for 2 1080p eyes were 3840X2160, then that would mean it was doubling the pixels vertically for no reason and would make the file twice as large which makes no sense. That's why it's 3840x1080, cause that two 1080p videos side by side with the best quality and no extra unused pixels. It just doesn't make sense that Bigscreen cant see that it's 3840x1080 and display the full video, and effectively applying the SBS effect.

I did manage to get it working by streaming the desktop, and stretching the vertical size by double which gives the correct SBS result, but it's annoying to do and sucks to control the video with the desktop SBS controls, not to mention it won't look at good as I'm using a 1440p monitor and it would be losing quality showing a video through that resolution. Wish Bigscreen could just get it working natively.
