Low Streaming FPS: Theater Mode
I was testing the ability to watch movies with my buddy and the framerate for the stream is fairly low (he's guessing about 10-12 fps). This makes any content pretty painful to watch to everyone but me. The sound comes across just fine, but the video is too stuttery.

I have a boss system (GTX 1080, i7) and a pretty high end internet connection, both up and down. I have no issues streaming high quality video to Twitch, however just streaming my screen to folks in my Bigscreen room is not good enough for enjoyable viewing. I've even cranked down settings within the application and lowered the resolution on my actual desktop to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this or had any solutions that might help with the streaming framerate?

Yeh I have the EXACT same issue. My friend lives just up the road from me, we are both with the same internet service provider and both have 227Mbps up and 18mbps down yet streaming to eachother is like 2FPS and is impossible to watch together. I understand this is a free game (and an amazing one too) but if there is anyway to remove (what seems like) a bandwidth limit when streaming in private lobbies that would be awesome! The number 1 reason my friend bought his Vive was to watch movies together in BigScreen. Good work though and I really hope to see a fix for this soon.

Currently, only been able to get 480p streaming working without lag for movies. However, this has turned out to be decent enough for watching movies together. Settings -> Multiplayer -> Broadcast Stream Resolution .

I believe we tried downscaling to 480p and still had framerate issues, though with worse picture quality. What video card are you using? Also, what video player are you using?

It's not a bandwidth issue, it's a performance issue with hardware accelerated video encoding and decoding.

We currently do all of this on the CPU, and only the Intel i7 Skylake desktop CPUs (6700 or newer) are capable of doing 1080p at 30fps.

480p 30fps should work flawlessly for anyone, even old i5 2500K CPUs from 5 years ago.

What CPU do you have?

We're working hard on various technical improvements for the streaming. This is still a beta, but fear not –– this will be SO much better in a few months :)

Im running a GTX 1070 with a i7 4790K @ 4.7 so I dont see how thats the issue. And some times in one room ths stream is perfect and in anouther its terrible.

I've got an i7-4790k. I have zero issues streaming 1080p video to Twitch, so why would I have issues streaming video to Bigscreen?

We use a different streaming technology than the one you are using for Twitch.

OBS is kind of the free gold standard for being able to stream video. It is simple and it works. Is that technology too robust to be able to duplicate within BS? I can tell you a whole lot of folks probably want to be able to use your application to watch shows/movies with friends without problems, yet we can't do it without awful quality video. It shouldn't be so hard to stream video over the internet in 2016. That technology has existed for the layman for years. Nothing about my machine would limit me streaming video to a small group of people. The issue is with the software.

Yes absolutely. The issue is with our software. That's the sole reason Bigscreen is still called a beta. We completely understand that everybody wants this, and as Shanks said above we are working hard at it. We're just two guys working out of apartments in Berkeley, and this is one of our top priorities.

OBS has thousands of man-hours put into it over many years. This obviously is not an incredibly easy problem as there is currently not one other VR application that offers what we do, after a year of us being around. There's not much else we can say or do aside from work more on it and get it done.

We all really apreciate the work you guys do, expecialy as it is free! All we ask though is that streaming to put to the top of the list. I would rather only have a void enviroment and good stream quility that any other features at the moment. Currently my and my friend sit in a single player lobby and use a program I wrote to sync up videos on a video player localy so we can share the same experience, its just an inconvinience to do it instead of streaming. But regardless thanks for the amazing software and the amazing experience!

I definitely appreciate the work because this application is awesome. I would definitely like to jump on board with the poster above me in urging you to get the streaming issues slotted at the top of the priority list for developer time. Thanks for the responses guys. Using VR headsets to watch movies/shows with friends in full smooth HD is going to be absolutely mindblowing.

Did hardware acceleration support happen? I'm running a 3930k @ 4.5ghz, but I'm not seeing close to 24fps on the bigscreen, so wondering if I need to tick a box somewhere to use NvEnc or something, rather than CPU encoding >_<
