5.1 surround sound

I remember reading somewhere that 5.1 was supported in big screen with the correct settings in windows. Does anyone know how to set it up? (I'm talking about spatial sound in the theatre for example)

As far as I can tell this at least gives you 5.1 directly to your headset: https://superuser.com/questions/292911/how-can-you-change-the-default-audio-output-in-vlc-to-5-1
Set the default output to oculus rift.
It doesn't emulate the room or anything but it's better than stereo.
