controller mapping

I've had this game for years. I know I can play it with the keyboard, but I want to play it with a controller.

I've been through every single community controller layout in the game and the best result I ever get is the left thumb stick acting like the dpad where I mostly crouch or drop stuff. The right thumb stick controls the camera like it should. So... I can get the controller to register a signal is all. But for some reason I can never get the left thumb stick to take up the wasd direction side of the game.

Also in pc settings the 'enable controller' option has never been able to be highlighted. It's always been greyed out.

I'd really love to play DR2 after all this time. Any mods or thoughts out there are appreciated. I feel like I have to be missing something real simple.

I have tried the steps in this guide and it hasn't worked for me yet.

If you haven't yet try x360ce in Administrator mode before you launch the game and disable steam input. If you have any wheels, joysticks, dualshock i would disconnect those too.
