How To - Late Edge Jump?
It seems a lot of runs use some kind of late jump, running off an edge, jumping then going left then right? I have searched around and cannot find any information on this teck...

Can anyone post a detailed reply on how to do this, how difficult it is and how much time it actually saves? Not only for me, but for anyone else trying to find this information too.

So this is called an edge jump, it works because marty has weird feet, and any time he walks off an edge he kinda slips down it, if you jump halfway through this slipping down you will get a boost forward. This works because falling speed and forward speed are tied, so you get a boost at the cost of a lower jump.

These can be 100% consistent at the very start of a map if you use the exact same line and timing, but the game only checks your position 60 times per second, and sometimes these checks dont quite line up with marty right on the edge, so you will need to slow down to hit that next "check". Towards the end of most levels this is essentially random and near impossible to control, but with perfect timing on the jump i would say its a little under 50% consistency.

The left/right movement you see can be used anywhere where the player has higher than normal velocity and is decelerating, but after edge jumps is by far the most common, it works by spamming a and d to strafe left and right to prevent speedloss. The faster you are going the longer this is useful for, but off a regular edge jump you want to do it for roughly 100-200ms, or 2 presses each of a and d at most (most people just use 2, and this is probably only 2-4ms slower)

A good edge jump will save a little over 50ms, but an attemped edge jump that misses, with the strafing included will lose around 120ms.

[12:09 PM] ZM: Anyone wanna get this? This could be actual useful information for people.
[12:09 PM] Sirius: Looks like this is your job now
[12:09 PM] Sirius: Wanted to pin good explanations to VIS as well
[12:10 PM] ZM: I barely understand Edge Jumps
[12:10 PM] ZM: I actually don't know how to do the one he's asking about

Your best bet is to just join the Discord and ask Sirius himself.

A nice answer, however what this seems to imply is you just press the jump button at the right time, that being either mousewheel or otherwise, I can't seem to get this right. Taking away consideration of tickrate in this example, Is there something I could be doing wrong, a better/best method or is it just pure practice and setup?

yeah it's basically all dependent on pressing the jump key at the right time. for the optimal edge jump it's actually best to do full-height jumps (e.g. holding spacebar on the jump rather than scroll wheeling).

"consistency" of edge jumps varies a lot from level to level. if you're practicing on the first map labyrinth you're probably not gonna get the edge jump for a long time. if you want to practice it, you should try get the edge jump on jumping jacks (the very first jump). just watch the replays to see what angle they align with and try to copy it.

finally, if you're serious about doing edge jumping stuff you should really download MrGentle's velocitymeter because it tells you a lot more useful info, including speed and angles so you can get a good setup for each edge.
