And i will name No Man Sky because that's another great example.
People say it's shallow have no idea what they are talking about the amount of content in that game that was added over the years for free is insane.
I don't disagree that NMS has had a metric TON of new content added over the years. But quality > quantity. They have added quantity, NONE of it is particularly high quality. It's all superficial systems, many of which don't enhance the game at all, and for those that do they stopped far short of actually making it particularly meaningful.

I have several thousand hours of playtime in NMS, I'm not saying this as someone who hates the game, I'm saying it as someone who loves it. Because all they do is free content, they don't take the "new things' they've added to the level that they could (and arguably should) have.

Name one of the new features added over the years and I can fill a couple of pages for how and why I say it falls short, but to keep this brief I'll just give one basic example:

They added Planetary settlements in the Waypoint update in 2022. This sounds like a really cool feature on paper, but in practice it's nothing but a time sink that actually feels like playing a mobile/phone game while inside NMS.

The settlements serve, quite literally, no real purpose and the elements of 'play' that they add don't actually contribute anything unique or interesting to the existing game.

What they could have been is pretty amazing, what they actually implemented is just pathetic, and I have no doubt that if planetary settlements had been added as a PAID dlc, they would have been far, far better than what we got.
I am not really here to defend No Man's Sky but what do players expect in a proc gen game like that. Full dialogue and story quest? entire villages/cities to interact with? Those games are in a separate genre for a reason.
BUT that being said I feel they should have at least 3 times the life variety, mineral, and rock variety. The reason they don't focus on those things is because, meh how long will that stuff keep you interest after you have seen it once or twice I think. I mean when I started playing I used to look at the flora and fauna in my data and let myself fall into the immersion of being a space explorer. But after a while it loses its appeal. I wish I had the answer for proc gen games to add more depth but I know nothing of coding and am not so arrogant to believe that just because I think it, it can be programmed without absurd code bloat.

So long as you price them fair, I will buy them every time.

Is this the post people are referring to when they keep saying they promised they'd never release more DLCs and will only do free content updates? https://steamcommunity.com/games/457140/announcements/detail/3388414690589449313

Nowhere do they say here that they're *never* going to release more DLC, nor do they say that they'll only ever release free content updates. They said they're shifting their focus... and focuses can change exactly as they did in that original news post. Unless there's some other place where they outright promise there will NEVER be another DLC ever again then it's a bit ridiculous to say they lied and compare them to companies that have repeatedly lied and failed to meet expectations.

Am i only one dissapointed that Klei flatout LIED about no more dlcs just content updates? Aswell as teased the DST like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ drop system - and now it's like "we gonna make content updates with things like new asteroids that gonna be paid dlcs!! And new skins are also gonna be in those paid dlcs from now on! And our first content update this year is gonna be one of those paid DLCs instead yay!"

Did i understand this right? This feels like a early not funny Aprils fool joke.

Guess Tencent finally managed to corrupt this company aswell.

Well that ruined my day...

How exactly do you want them to keep supporting the game when they get no more money ? Atleast this way the game can keep growing

The price of the game are Peanuts compare to other games, so make some Money with DLC is the way to go. I will buy it :) I realy don´t know why some people expect longtime free updates for that pricetag...
The people probably expect it because that it was they said to expect....
yess finally I will be able to give more money to you

While a second DLC would certainly expand the game, it’d limit our design choices. We’d have to decide which features base game players would have access to—and which ones they’d be left out of.

The more DLCs there are, the harder it gets for us to implement bug fixes and balance changes that are viable for everyone across all versions of the game. That sounds about as appealing as an all-mushbar buffet.

We want you all along for the ride! So we’re shifting our focus to building out a lot of the same content and systems you’d expect from a DLC, and releasing them regularly as free game updates that work for both base game and Spaced Out!

I think that one was pretty self explanatory....

Add more Deep Dive and Rock'n Stone!

Were you meant to post that that in the recent DRG Season 5 Announcement but accidentally posted it in ONI announcement instead? :awkward:

I absolutely hated it when Klei decided and first announced they would continue with free updates and no more DLCs.

Great content has to be paid for, otherwise there won't be great content. Simple as that. I enjoy ONI MASSIVELY and I am more than willing to pay for all upcoming DLCs.

This not only encourages the devs to keep working on the game, but also helps them produce even more quality content.
我不差那几十块,快端上来罢!

Nonsense. There are quite few games that prove this wrong and i mentioned several of them in my earlier post here today.

Or encourages them to release low effort cash grabs DLCs like most studios who "shift focus" to dripfeeding content via DLCs end up doing.

The kind of content they want to include in said DLCs sound like it's fraction of what Spaced Out! DLC has content wise (even in it's early days) and what they said the time between these DLC releases is also very worrying.

This whole going back on their word and deciding to do these kind of update sized paid DLC releases often. Stinks of Tencent.

Same way they been doing it for years both for ONI and DST?
Same way other indie sutdios who add free content updates instead adding them as dlcs do?

You have no idea what you are talking about if you think Klei has no money or close to having no money.

I'm a bit worried you're turning the game into a DLC mill. I kind of preferred the expansion model where we got a meaty upgrade to the game every few years. The free updates were not that great to me, but at least they didn't cost anything. It feels like this new model will be somewhere in the middle where it might be neither meaty or free. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the content-to-price ratio is going to be like.

There's been a fair few developers that cash in on their games with frequent low-effort high-price DLCs until they run out of goodwill and I hate it and end up not buying anything from that developer (or even publisher) ever again. Please don't become part of that group.
