its annoying because the game keeps deleting, shuffling, or randomizing the feeder selection. even if I somehow get the selections to stay for that specific critter, it won't feed and the critter won't eat even if there's food on the ground.
the feeder works fine for most critters though.
but in my latest game, the feeder absolutely could not keep settings and kept scrambling them around when I set it to feed sage hatch no matter how many times I fixed it and tried to clean it up.
Not intuitive or obvious in the UI, but there is some logic there.
I noticed that and was starting to think that too, but no there's something weird and funny going on where the selections get shuffled up and, even if the intended critter is still selected, it never gets fed and it starves to death.
for me it was sage hatches.
1 Set up critter feeders for, in my case, Hatches.
2 Close feeder window.
3 Open feeder window.
4 Seemingly random critters are selected with seemingly random food.
(optional) 5 repeating the process from 1 leads to same effect.
6 Critters die.
Lost my colony to this....... :,(

edit for tl;dr purposes: Player tells the feeder to feed a specific critter. The feeder changes the player's selections, doesn't feed critters being ranched, and critters starve to death. That's acting accordingly to you?
-------------------------------------------------------
If the feeder bug is still present, it is DEFINITELY AN ERROR IN THE GAME'S PROGRAMMING and not a misunderstanding the feeder auto selects all the critters that consume a specific resource you have selected.
As in I have the resource I want loaded in the feeder, I have it checked off in the feeder menu, the feeder automatically changes and removes selections I've made, and the critters I want fed starve to death. When I check the feeder again, as originally stated, I find a bunch of random critters selected instead and the critters I want fed were removed.
Expand the triangles and you can confirm for yourself exactly which materials you've enabled. If multiple types of critters can eat the same material, then storing it means any of those critters can eat from the feeder.
Why are you assuming I don't know how to play the game?
I haven't played ONI in a long time, but, again, the bug is I set the feeder to feed a specific critter. There are no other critters getting into the room. The bug is the feeder configuration automatically changes itself upon exiting set up. The critter I'm ranching doesn't get fed and dies.
What are you going on about?
If I had an automatic cat bowl loaded with chicken to feed the cat, I'd expect the cat bowl to still feed the cat even if it fed the dog too, you dink!
I actually grew up with cats and dogs too! Did you know dogs like to drink water out of the same thing humans poop and pee in?
The configuration of the Critter Feeder isn't changing.
If you do not expand the triangles and check "Hatch", all materials that a Hatch will eat like Dirt, Sandstone, etc will be stored in the feeder. Hatchlings will eat all of these. Sage Hatches will eat Dirt as well, but not Sandstone.
That's all you need to know, so you should now understand how not to starve critters.
Want better control? Expand the triangles and choose specific materials. This requires you to understand what foods each critter eats or does not eat.
I was giving you a real world example. Since you fail to understand, let me spell out the analogy:
cat :: Hatch
dog :: Sage Hatch
chicken :: Dirt
If loaded with Dirt, the Critter Feeder will supply Dirt to both types of Hatches.
On the other hand, if you load it with only Sandstone, Sage Hatches would starve.
Clear now?
There may be users who do not understand Miller triangles in the UI, although managing a Storage Bin via categories or precise individual materials works exactly the same way.
heh. wow. lonely night, eh? don't worry, I've got the time to waste replying.
The only thing clear to me is you ought to report back to the nearest tech station and have your hard drive analyzed. It is apparent you have some bad sectors.
Either that or you're a troll. Its that whole being dense on purpose thing...
Because you really are assuming I don't know how to play the game, go on to explain what I already know, and deliberately ignore the problem I and others are encountering: the game is changing the feeder selections and the critter its supposed to feed isn't being fed. It is definitely not an issue of something else is eating the resource put into it. It is also not me being confused the feeder automatically tics the boxes for critters that eat a specific resource. The problem is, again, because I have to spell this out for you: the feeder isn't feeding the critter I want it to feed. The box for that critter unchecked itself. And when that happens, the feeder has a bunch of critter/resource boxes ticed seemingly at random when it is checked again.
Granted that others are running into the same issue I did, the bug should be able to be reproduced and fixed. Having someone take it upon themselves to address the issue by arguing with me and insist I don't understand how the game works when I do, and that the issue doesn't exist when it does is insulting AF
edit: ok, I get it now. Your arrogant/looking down your nose at others insisting they're ignorant and below you attitude is normal for someone who lives in the region you do. Sorry.
From prior threads on both Steam and on the Klei forums, the Critter Feeder is working as the developers intend. Many people find it intuitive. Some people find it confusing. But I have yet to see a proposal for an alternate user interface for the Critter Feeder which is more discoverable for typical players.
As for being ignorant, everybody is ignorant about some topics:
https://xkcd.com/1053/
I have never and would never criticize someone for being ignorant.
Refusing to learn is a different story, however.
PS: Convincing Klei that you do not understand the user interface rotating triangles used to expand container categories is unlikely to be persuasive as to the merits of your bug report.
Honestly, I don't give a flying F anymore. I made this post 2 1/2 years ago back when I was very active with this game. I'm not so much anymore. It was also made before Klei was bought out by Tencent. Klei answers to that shadowy monopolistic entity now, not their customers. They certainly won't care unless the bug is game breaking. They probably wouldn't even consider the report unless its submitted in Cantonese anyway.
And...
Do you mind if I spend the rest of this reply critiquing your technique?
Don't worry, I'm not asking for permission. I'm doing it anyway...
See, when you started that sentence off with "Good luck" that's your snotty passive aggressive Californiaishness showing. Its adds that proper bit of spite I'm used to seeing out of the worst parts of California like SF. Now if you were a New Yorker, you'd be straight up rude. Yours is a little more indirect style of condescending. Its good! Could be better. I give it a B-.
It works, but I and others are saying it has a bug present. You should have been able to pick up on that by now.
Oh! Hey! I've seen this one before! I know what this is.... I'm calling you out on it! This is what is called 'moving the goal posts'. You and I have had this back and forth where I am insisting there is a bug present, and you repeatedly attempt to convince me I don't understand what I'm doing or how the critter feeder works.
You've gone from telling me I'm the problem to the interface is the problem. Its beyond my primitive mind.
Not once has anyone brought the interface up. The interface is simple and straight forward. The word you used, intuitive, is apt.
And look at how you ended that sentence. "discoverable for typical players". Man, if only those Chuds could educate themselves, am I right? Heckin' pee babies... Nothin but a buncha shirtlord troglodytes buyin this game. I bet they voted for Drumpft, too! What a burden!
This topic was dormant for roughly 6 months before you decided to chime in with, "Ackchyually...." Admi-OH I'M SO SORRY! Should I be calling them jannies? Jannies typically get their panties in a bunch when old threads suddenly become active again. Necroposting is the hipster term they use. They freak out and act like its some sort of crime. More of a pet peeve if you ask me... That or they have a really weird interpretation of death and disturbing the dead.
You've literally been treating every single person who's brought this issue up as if they're ignorant as to how the critter feeder works and have been particularly stubborn, strangely so, to the notion there might be a bug present.
Nice! An arrogantly smug follow up! Clever twist on the common 'educate yourself' go to. Very big city Cali. Solid A.
This may shock you, but your petty attempt to wag your pee-pee at me is as insignificant as this bug report ever will be.
I am merely poking you for entertainment now.
Hey! Do you remember that analogy you made about cats and dogs and putting chicken in the cat bowl and the dog eating it? Well here's an analogy for you....
Consider a colony in ONI. One that is very very old.... 1000's of cycles old. Centuries in fact... Its well put together, thriving, and essentially automated. It can fully run itself with no input, warts and all. This included having walkways made out of mesh tiles to be used as makeshift latrines since the dupes would rather just pee wherever they were instead of go in a toilet. A big part of the colony's success is meal lice farming. That relationship is very close. The dupes have been share cropping it for a very long time. For a forever long time. Before history was ever recorded, even. If the lice loaf isn't faring well, neither is the colony.
Then, one day, the colony falls under the command of a new player. This new player states the colony is mired in antiquity and backwardness. Its needs to move forward. In one great leap! What does this new player point at as being the most antiquated and backwards?
The meal lice...
"Get rid of it all and start growing other stuff.", the new leader says.
So the dupes dutifully replace it all with bristle blossoms, dusk caps, pincha pepperplant, jumping joya, etc....
The bristle blossom crop fails. Not enough water. Not enough light.
The dusk cap crop fails too. Too bright. Not the right atmosphere. No slime...
They can't grow the pincha pepper. The f-ing thing needs to grow upside down. Its beyond the dupes mental capacity.
The jumping joya isn't even f-ing food.
This is all garbage the dupes have never ever farmed before. And was all done in an environment perfect for growing mealwood, but ill suited for growing anything else.
That was the splendor of the mealwood; it was so easy to grow anywhere, even the dumbest, ugliest, and most incompetent dupe could do it. If they weren't good for anything else, they were good for farming mealwood at the very least.
The consequence of the new leader's buffoonish attempt to fix what wasn't broken is around cycle 1958, many dupes began dropping dead from starvation. The formerly self sufficient colony began to break down and collapse.
And you wanna know how that new player, that new leader handled this disastrous situation? You want to know how he went about fixing it?
He got on the ONI forum on Steam and made a new post with the title, "Eating less food is a good thing! Here's why:"
And every reply made saying "my dupes aren't being fed and are starving to death. my colony is collapsing. fix plox." the new leader responded with,
"You just don't understand what you're doing."
as for the bug I'm trying to point out (in vain it feels like), I don't care if it gets resolved anymore. I've moved on to playing a REAL game: Winnie The Pooh Baseball on Playstation. So much better than ONI. Oh my God, you can't even imagine....
When your own posts state self-contradictory positions, nobody can make sense out of such nonsense. Indulging yourself in ad hominems about where I live and the other attempted insults is equally silly nonsense.
However, I do care about ONI bugs. If there actually is a reproducible bug with the Critter Feeder, someone would be able to show it in a screenshot or video, and provide the steps needed to demonstrate this bug.
Klei can't reproduce this supposed issue and neither can I. Got screenshots or a video?
If not, well, I wouldn't trust your words to be credible without supporting evidence.
