That's an interesting idea but yeah, very slow.. too bad sand doesn't form new blocks when you drop it from above.
take yellowstone national park for example. you cant exactly get rid of all the trees and stuff, realize your mistake, and replant it all. you should have to keep the wild plants from the start, or lose them forever.
You can already plant wild seeds, and you can make dirt block where every you want using Voles. To make a dirt blocks just build a metal room in the shape of the dirt blocks you want to place like it was a mold, place dirt in a storage bin, delete the storage bin, put a vole in the room and he'll fill the free space with dirt blocks. To plant a wild seed, just drop a seed on any dirt block and wait like 10 cycles and it'll start growing on it's own.
You can also now use PIPs to replant seeds as well.
Also it take one cycle for your dupes to make a 3x9 room out of metal tiles and move a single egg into the room, not hours. And the voles make blocks pretty quickly since they are what remake the blocks on the surface.
