How do radbolts work?

I have made it to the point in research where i need the yellow research. I have the station down, and a manual radbolt generator pointing at the machine. It just shots the bolt past it though. How do you get it in the station?

If you hit the radiation overlay, you'll see where the radbolts need to hit. Also the machine needs to be powered.
