If I recall correctly the mailbox acts similar to a pedestal, which is how you deliver food to him.

Me too, i don't understand how his mailbox work. I put a +4 food (as requested) on a piedestal near his home but nothing happened.

It works :) It's the quality food +4, not the moral bonus. As I understand, you have to do 3 differents food to valid the quest.
