whats the trick to harvesting gas pockets?
Im kind of stuck right now at this point. just got to the point i can start collecting various gases and i have quite a few pockets of chlorine i wanted to collect and store.

However i cant figure out a way to collect any gas pockets because from what i can tell i have to break in there to get stuff like pumps and vents in there. But the problem is when i go in these pockets to put in my macinery it slowly leaks the gas out as my dupes enter and exit.

The current method i tried was building walls of concrete aound the pockets along with some airlock doors going to the pocket where my dupes would be entering to build. But this just slowly leaks the gas through the airlock doors and out of the pockets as my dupes come and go to build.

im just not sure what the trick is to harvesting gases. actually whether that be in pockets of gas or otherwise.

Just seems to me my dupes have to get into the areas of gas to build the stuff to pump and transport it all to storage and there seems to be no avoiding losing quanity of the gas or all of it altogether by the time i get the macinery set up to take it.

I know im just not seeing a strategy or something because i have a pea brain. But thats why ive come here asking for help lol.

You don't have a pea brain. Well, I guess I am not sure, but not from I can tell from your question.
I remember when I first started playing ONI, and this one confused the heck out of me too. I really struggled with it, until I finally looked it up and found how liquid locks work.
Years later, I don't think about it much. But back then, I remember being really disappointed with how this was implemented in the game.
Like I said, not a big deal now. I throw these down all the time and move on.
Sometimes you have to build a double liquid lock, with a vacuum in the middle, so the heat from the area you are digging into doesn't transfer and heat up too much, and destroy your liquid of choice (such as water to steam). But that's for only very hot areas.
Also, you can get mods that have doors that are gas proof, liquid proof, temp proof, etc if you so desire.

Unless you're aware of an immediate use for X gas (with chlorine it's often, rushing drecko ranching), don't bother collecting it from random pockets of gas.

If you have a specific process in mind that requires a constant amount of resources, and you want to figure it out, then it's extremely worth it to set up the infrastructure needed to instead claim a renewable source (ie. chlorine vent) as that gives you a constant, almost permanent per second income - chlorine allows things such as saltvine farms, puft ranching or even cow ranching.

That said, if you don't want to use liquid locks as already suggested, you can dig into an area from the top or bottom while keeping oxygen pressure high enough for the gas to stay away from your entrance.

I'm not sure i understand the question. Do you want to store the gas or use it?

Storage would involve a gas pump and a gas tank. Some kind of filter in between. Maybe some automation for it to stop if it's not needed. Atmos sensor or gas element type i suppose.

Chlorine is heavier than oxygen, hydrogen is lighter. If you put enough oxygen above chlorine and then dig down, the chlorine should stay in place. Same if you put enough oxygen below hydrogen.

You can build an airlock and pump first and then open up the gas pocket. That way, the airlock only opens once before you can vacuum the inside.

Each gas has a different density, so it will float or sink on other gases. If you build a way in from above, then oxygen won't get in and chlorine won't get out (unless the gas has very different density, because gases also try to equalize pressure)
With a little experimentation I found you can clean the air of any gas by using an gas pump
, air scrubber and gas vent.. All the chlorine and other gasses I added to the piped canister machine which can all be used later.
if you want to do it without the gasses escaping you'll generally need a liquid lock of some sort. once you get the hang of it you can set up a temporary single-drop liquid lock pretty easily.

though if it's just chlorine I usually just crack them open and let it all settle to the bottom of my base and deal with it later. it ends up being a losing battle trying to keep every bit of chlorine out.

similarly with hydrogen I just let it all raise to the top of the base and eventually pump it into a generator to burn it off.

I only really worry about sour gas and natural gas, sour gas is a pain to clean up :S

I still wish klei would implement a proper airlock... but learning how to build the 3-tile vacuum lock helped.

the processes works something like this

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3466677879
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3466678583

then once you get the hang of it you can do something a little more janky like this
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3466738886
you only really need the one drop of water to keep the gases from escaping while you pump them out :)

I used to do the water-lock procedure, but it's just taking way too much time.
Now I just do the following - doesn't matter the size of the gaz pocket:

Leaving 2 spaces between the pump and the door does the trick, but might require a bit more if the pressure inside the pocket is really high (>50kg).
A filter on the gaz pipe then lets you redirect your target gaz from any pollution.
