Oxylite: sconces and storage bins
The description says: Sconces prevent diffused oxygen from being wasted inside storage bins.

I never thought about storage bins being wasteful when it comes to oxylite. In fact, in certain situations in the past I've opted to just store oxylite in bins and let it offgas from there.
Now this description makes me wonder. Are storage bins inefficient in some way (as is produce less oxygen)? Or are the new sconces more efficient (as in produce more oxygen from the same amount oxylite)?

Sadly I haven't found more than that description in game.
From short observation: oxylite seems to offgas slower in sconces than in a bin.

If someone has any observations or ideas I'd like to hear about it.
Thanks and happy researching.

I'm the same boat, confused about their usecase. Maybe their intended use is that of a small storage bin for localized offgassing, and presumably the job to fill them is life-support, not storage, so it will be more reliable to have them filled.

I think the flavor is just flavor. There is no lost mass if stuff offgasses in storage bins afaik.

Anyway, commenting to stay in the loop.

I'm producing my oxygen (alveo vera farm) through storage bins, seems to be working just fine. Maybe it's not 100 efficient but how else do you transport them to certain destinations?

I imagine it's just so you can relocate your oxygen to where you want it. For instance, if you're producing oxygen via the new plants, then you're likely to have them all near the bottom of your base where the carbon dioxide is collected.

Oxygen will rise, but slowly, and depending on how your base is designed, it wont really get to the upper levels sometimes.

The Sconces allow you to bring all your oxygen to the upper parts of your base where it can push all carbon dioxide down where it's supposed to be.

The same can be achieved by storing the oxygen in bins, yes. Whether it's less efficient I have no idea. The work around would just be filling bins in the upper levels of your base with Oxylite then just removing it from the storage list of the bin, so it falls to the floor.

Sconces don't seem too useful to me, other than as a decoration. Storage bins let you move mass amounts in one go rather than have your dupes constantly transporting it, unless you've automated it already.

I have bins a little above my alveo vera strip to collect the bulk of the oxylite, then i use sconces spread around my base to get an even spread of oxygen pressure. Seems to work well, the sconces aren't refilled that often so I don't really notice much dupe effort being spent on it. I'm not aware of any downsides to having oxylite in bins, other than the area around the bin hitting max pressure and not offgasing while other distant areas might be low pressure.

As I see it, bins do not go well for example with barracks. They take room and are ugly.

Sconces fit above beds nicely so sleep is not disturbed by lack of oxygen.

you dupes treat the sconces as a life support item and the storage is just storage so the priority on them is completely different.

Bins take space. They also take longer to get built than sconces. Also, you do not have to setup your bin to only accept 200 kg of oxylite, for example. All in all, I love sconces !
I believe both have their purposes, OP. :yetuhappy:
