Should I play with or without DLC first?

Either way is good. The DLC is a bit more complicated, but if you don't mind some extra mid game complexity you can't go wrong with it. Get ready to restart your first few colonies though, this game has many challenges

Play vanilla. Until you get bored (complete the main mission a few times). Then go to DLC. Because DLC has so much stuff that it would be overwhelming had I gone there first.

I'd play without to begin with-- although I'm not sure it is really easier or merely simpler.

The start is mostly the same but with the DLC the research tree changes a lot.
You can go with the DLC if you've already bought it.

i agree with the one before me, if you have the DLC play with it, if you dont have it play base game

Play Spaced Out with Classic size asteroid. This will give you all the options of the DLC, but you have practically everything you need on your home asteroid without getting into rocketry. You’ll only need to start a rocketry program when you want to advance into late game techs that require data disks.. (you'll get enough on the asteroid for 2 or 3 techs). But if you’re just starting out will be a-ways away.
