Is there no tutorial?
I tried starting a new game with all the basic settings and the UX is completely overwhelming.

There are mini-guides that pop up on the left but there is nothing resembling a comprehensive tutorial.

you can check youtube for basic gameplay explained

The whole game is designed so that the tutorial is built in. When you start a new game, there is very little that you can do other than dig. As soon as you dig out a block, you gain the ability to construct ladders and floors, plus a few buildings like the research bench. The rest are unlocked via research, allowing you to progress at your own speed. Just experiment as you go along and you’ll figure it out. Even if you don’t consult external guides, you can do experiments inside the game to work out anything that is confusing.

In the 'no sweat mode', the game gives pointers to what is needed to be done on the top left along with tutorials, which maybe text or text with a short cute video.

But it will be bare minimum. Learning what each research items does and the encyclopaedia (idk what it's called, it's in top right) describing each an every element, organism, biomes etc. is a commitment required from the player side.

I can't tell about the 'survival mode', seems hardcore and intimidating.
I think they're still available is the survival, but you are punished more with stress, calories, sickness, etc

the tutorial is consigning your first 5-100 bases to doom

The game already has a built in self explanatory tutorial, Guiding the player through game-play with a comprehensive index to lookup information.
Due to the multiple ways to tackle any given problem at any time, they've taken the approach of having every player almost on their own as the community handles teaching each other.

There are so many ways to make a "something" that works to do what you want with the tools you're given that creators may not even have anticipated sometimes.

Be sure to click on the things that you see pop up as you play. They are how I learned to play before I tried to learn how to build more advanced bases using wikis and YouTube.

That most certainly is not true at all, You'd have to explain what you mean for that to make any sense.
Or it's super well hidden, which would also deny your claim of "self-explanatory".

Next time, Think before you speak.

It won't matter how anyone responds to your question. You clearly haven't seen it then. Highly recommend you start a new game, and like everyone else indicated, Click on those tutorial tool-tips that appear on the left upper side, Those are quick reference on how to play, Then there's a huge book at upper right hand corner called Database > index filled with relevant information regarding the how the rest of the game works with detailed description about everything. Beyond that no one can help you further if you can't comprehend it.

Otherwise i implore you to seek guidance from the official Klei website community forums and ask the developers themselves directly, What is the purpose of the in-game tool-tips and what is the Database > index useful for.

Give you one guess...

PS: If you thought Oxygen Not Included didn't have a tutorial, Then you haven't played Don't Starve yet, And if you have. Then you should clearly know the difference by now.

It gives you basic instructions in the top left corner at start when you are missing key stuff. Otherwise the tutorial would just be playing the game.

If it just showed you how to do it, that would be ruining the game. The majority of the game is figuring out how to do the stuff you need before all your dupes die. That IS the game for the most part.

They could maybe have made a small tutorial level that only lets you play through the bare basics... but it is not super hard to sort out on your own to start out. Some machines could be explained better in game, but ultimately it depends on where you start and what you have to know for sure what you need to do.

If you want advanced stuff, there are a ton of vids you can watch and see how others do it, but there is by no means only one way to do stuff.

EDIT: As an example of what I am talking about, here is a screen shot of my recent "idea". There is no tutorial going to show you this, as I just made it up and it may or may not work, but will probably need a few tweaks, but it is an area I am setting up to allow my algae oxygen diffusers to run and try and minimize the heat getting into the rest of my base without impeding the airflow too much so they operate properly. I had to think of a solution myself for this and it is in all likely hood not a great solution but hey, lets try it out. That is the fun of the game. This is just a small example.

Yeah exactly, Just like my Hotel Not included, I had to figure out how to control heat, oxygen, sanitation, i did everything by myself, used my own creative human ingenuity (Which we call Brains) from just playing the game. You don't need a tutorial to tell you how to be creative, problem solving, design methods.

Do this. Then whatever hurt your colony most, try to adjust next time around. Eventually cycle 1000 wont even be a challenge. Right now I am discovering the advanced end of colonization and rocketry. There will be many dead dupes/reloads (like the time i filled my rocket with half petroleum and half ethanol...... WHY does it let me do that
