Why use a liquid lock when you could use an airlock?
Airlocks are supposed to prevent gas from crossing, right?

I'm designing my slimelung safe room. Is there any reason to prefer liquid locks over a manual airlock?

Yes there is very simple reason why liquid lock is much simplier, because you cannot use just one door, like many people think.

Working airlock is a combination of 2 doors and a room between, which can be vacuumed, in order to get rid of gases, which goes in whenever any of the 2 doors are opened.

So the mechanical airlock will allow air to travel through, when it's open? Dang. Thanks
I suppose, when I put it like that, the answer was obvious all along. Stupido

I'm sorry but what else did you expect when door is opened? There is no longer any barrier to block gases movement.

Liquid locks can also be grouped into simple ones and more complicated. I like to use just a simple drop of naphta and 1 tile difference of levels. Single drop of naphta can be up to 30kg, so such lock is harder to accidentaly break. Adventage is that it requites only one step up/down for dupes, which makes them cross it very fast.

=DUDE, LIQUID AIRLOCKS PREVENT ANY GAS TRANSFER AT ALL CIRCUMSTANCES

............. U JUST DONT KNOW HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS............

=LIKE, THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO CREATE AREAS WITH VACUUM BETWEEN .......... AND NOTHING DOES INSULATE BETTER THAN LAYER OF VACUUM , SO ALL YOUR STUFF WILL REMAIN COOL OR HOT

............. OF COURSE IF DUPES WILL TRAVERSE IN ATMO SUITS BC THEY'RE BREATHING OUT CARBON DIOXIDE EVENTUALLY

=SO U CAN MAKE THINGS LIKE ........ ACCESS TO EXTREMELY HOT AREAS FOR ANY PURPOSE, KIND OF

..................... AND DONT FORGET THAT LIQUID AIRLOCKS ARE MAINTAINING ANY PRESSURE!!!!!! ............. SO U CAN ESTABLISH AN ACCESS TO ROOM WITH INFINITE GAS STORAGE , LIKE THIS

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3019502259

=KIND OF............ U DONT KNOW WHAT PIPE/POWER/CONVEYOR LINE U'LL BE HAVING THROUGH THIS AREA IN FUTURE, RIGHT??????

=BY THE WAY, LIQUID LOCKS ARE EXTREMELY USEFUL EVEN AT EARLY GAME BC U CAN ESTABLISH ALGAE TERRARIUM ROOM BEHIND LIQUID LOCK!!!!! ......... SO THEY WILL NOT MAKE KIND OF POPPED EARDRUMS EVERYWHERE, Y KNOW

................... OR U CAN CREATE AN AREA WITH POLLUTED OXYGEN VAPORIZATION ROOM, ALSO BEHIND LIQUID LOCK

................. SOOOOO...........

=ABOUT YOUR THING--- SO U'LL MAKE AN INFINITE STORAGE ROOM LIKE AT SCREENSHOT SO ALL POLLUTED OXYGEN WILL WAIT THERE UNTIL IT'LL BE PROPERLY RECYCLED , RIGHT??????

Liquid locks are perfect, air locks leak. Liquid locks can fail when the liquid boils, air locks fail when the metal gets slagged.
It is very important to use liquid locks when diving down to the deeper levels, and it's handy to have an airlock backup. There's no reason you can't use both, and there may be a situation where you're glad you did.

Airlock doors allow gases to pass through once opened, meaning you need another method of dealing with the temporary gas mix. Unless you keep them closed, it's not a true lock.

But gasses cannot pass through liquids, which means "Liquid Locks" can easily be placed without the worry of ever allowing unwanted gasses to mix.

if you're not using atmo suits liquid locks cause the "sopping wet" debuff which increases stress.

if you're making an airlock to keep out slimelung, i'd just make a fairly large room with manual airlocks at either end and put deodorisers and hand sanitisers in the room to clean the oxygen and the dupes. also, a quirk of the game is that only one type of germ can exist in a given tile. the "floral scents" given off by buddy buds and bristle blossoms count as germs, and they output so much of it that it often overrides slimelung and kills it off for you, as well as providing the "smelled flowers" buff to your dupes. buddy buds are excellent for cleaning slimelung out of the air, and they're completely free!

There are also gas locks (gas equivalent of liquid locks), where the most commonly used gas for those is CO2, but the pressure changes on either side of the lock can cause it to break so it's most useful in a dire situation.

The CO2 lock (or Hydrogen lock) are pretty good for many situations, can be really easy to make, and avoid soaking your Dupes. Note that "pressure" in ONI is not like in our experience outside the game, more "things seek their natural level" sorting (Aristotelian) than gravity/pressure/buoyancy. Sure they can break under some circumstances, but they have their place.

I remember seeing designs of several doors in a row to prevent gas transfer as Dupes passed trough. Some might have been fast enough with enough doors in a row to overcome gas transport, others let in some gas then crushed it out after Dupe passage.
Thanks all. I can certainly see the utility of these locks, and they'll work well with the atmo suits which i unlocked last night.

It still feels a little exploity to me, like we're cheating the mechanics of the game to do something the programmers never intended.

It shouldn't. A liquid lock is not at all exploity. It's intended, and makes sense for the most part. An exploit/cheat would be an airlock mod. A proper liquid lock takes time to set up, especially in the early game when materials are limited.

The simpler ones only require a Bottle Emptier and a liquid that won't vaporize when a dupe walks through it carrying something hot.

A better one would include two locks, a pipe delivering Crude Oil or better, a ventilation system creating a vacuum between the locks and possibly filtering the other side, and also, possibly depending, a good insulator like Ceramic.

Also it is much faster to run past liquid lock compare to openning airlock door.

Unfortunately there's no true airlock system (unless we're talking about whatever the DLC rockets use) so players have to use these pools of liquid.
They're both a blessing and a curse, as their existence is a lifesaver but they make it so that real airlocks are unlikely to be added to the game.

=NOPE, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO ADD THEM BC OF GAME'S LIMITATIONS

............. ........ EVEN IN REAL LIFE, THERE'S ALWAYS SOME LOSSES
