........... HMMMMPHHHH............... I'M DOING PRETTY MUCH NOOBISH BUT THAT DOES WORK SOME HOW...............

............. ABOUT!!!!!!!!!........ TRY TO MAKE KIND OF LAYERS THAT 4 HIGH CONNECTED VIA LADDER HIGHWAYS!!!!!

............ AND......... MOST IMPORTANTLY......... ABOUT TO MAKE ROOMS THAT HAVE VOLUME ABOUT 96 TILES, BC OF MOST ROOMS HAVE MAX SIZE OF 96 TILES

=ALSO!!!.......... WHEN U'RE DIGGING, TRY TO BUILD LADDERS ON WHICH YOUR DUPES WILL MOVE FREELY BUT ALL SOLIDS AND LIQUIDS WILL GO DOWN SO U'LL JUST MAKE CLEAN TILES OVER LADDERS AND OK

=ALSO............. FEEL THE POWER OF MOP TOOL!!!!! ....... BC OF IF U'LL PERSIST, AND FIGURE IT OUT U'LL BE ABLE TO MOP OUT EVERY BODY OF LIQUIDS, HEHE.......... ABOUT MOP CAN DO NO MORE THAN 150Kg PER TILE....... SO IF U'LL MANAGE, U'LL MANAGE

=ALSO WATCH THIS............. ABOUT PEOPLE WERE ASKING "IS THIS STILL WORKING???"........ U'VE GOT TO LEARN HOW TO PULL OUT ALL THESE TRICKS TO ADVANCE, OK??????

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI9AAqygt8s

.................. ANDDDDD......... ALSO ABOUT............ TRY TO NOT ALLOW AIR PRESSURE TO GET ABOVE 4Kg BC OF THAT'LL STRESS OUT DUPES AND THEY'LL ALL DIE SO PLEASE PUT ALGAE TERRARIUMS BEHIND LIQUID LOCKS

............... AND FOR POWER TRY TO FIND SOME GEYSER OF WHATEVER WATER AND BUILD HYDRA AND THEN COOL OXYGEN THAT'LL COME OF IT WITH WHEEZE WORT COOLING SYSTEM, KIND OF

=OKKKK IF U'LL TRY TO FIGURE WHAT I'VE JUST WRITE, THEN YOUR DUPES WILL HAVE CHANCE TO NOT DIE

........... OKKKK ............ ABOUT IT SHOULD VE LOOK LIKE...... TRY TO STUDY IT OUT THAT'LL HELP A LOT, I GUESS..... ABOUT ALL IMPORTANT STUFF U SHOULD LEARN TO NOT DIE......... PROS ARE DOING DIFFERENTLY BUT TO DO THE JOB DONE WHAT I'M DOING IS OK

Split your base into areas such as living, food production, employment, industry, etc. Keep it fairly contained, so things are manageable; generally, you want to scope out the borders of your primary base before getting too far.

From there, slowly expand based on your space/resource needs. It's easy to keep your colony going when taking things slow, but trying to expand quickly requires a plan. Learn to use your available space first, then build it out as necessary. Figure out how to mine for specific resources instead of just digging out entire areas randomly; more open space means Oxygen production and distribution becomes harder to control without some kind of fail-safe.

And most importantly don't feel like you need to take duplicants every time the printing pod refreshes . More duplicants means you need more space and resources to keep them productive. This is the biggest mistake newer players make, the game does not have a time limit; don't feel like you need to race against the clock.

Make your rooms 4 tiles tall and have a central ladder shaft that's also 4 tiles wide. First rooms you'll be building are a bathroom (4 toilets, 4 sinks) then a barracks (8 beds). Upgrade to plumbed bathrooms early, barracks don't need any improvements except for decorations.

The asteroid starts with some food you can dig up and afterwards you can research (or rediscover) agriculture then grow ~5 mealwood per worker - don't bother with microbe mushers.
As for oxygen, research then build electrolyzers near top of your base then connect a pump that's in water to it using liquid pipes. If CO2 is an issue then dig an increasingly deeper pit under your base.

If there's a liquid spill, mop it up because liquids make air flow worse but if there's debris (items) on the ground then ignore all of it until you're past struggling to survive.

^^^^ THIS ^^^
No one needs more than 5 duplicants until they're really, really comfortable with the first ~100 cycles.

Always. Be. Researching.

Always have 5 Mealwood plants growing per duplicant (or Bristle Berry plants under lights -- better yet, DON'T release Shine bugs hovering above wild-grown Bristle Berries. Just trap them in there w/doors.

Use the "Rooms" overlay (upper-right corner) to give you a hint as to what rooms should contain (or not), and how big they should be.

Late advice, but.... I build my bases very differently than most people and find the early game very easy.
I try to maintain as much natural mealwood as possible as free food and later nature reserves. Having lots of the starting terrain will give you a good heat sink to absorb heat that can kill your base.

I minimize my electricity use and use manual generators on a single battery to power a few algae oxidizers and research stations until I can get natural gas. When I find some natural gas, I'll crush 400-600 units of refined metal, and make an automated smart-battery (simply run automation wires between generator and smart battery) and power my base that way.
I only use coal generators for very remote power sources like oil refining. Coal generators can kill early bases with heat and CO2, and later coal shortages.

Develop farms fairly early and eat uncooked mealwood early game. Make mush bars and grill them if and when you have food shortages. Your water will last a very long time this way. Keep your advanced science station and mush bar maker close to your water pump.
Basic latrines will last you until mid-late game. No reason to make water pumps and pipes and then have to deal with waste-water and all that.
I don't worry about composting, either. Maybe a storage container for the poluted dirt from the latrines, and some nearby deoderisers will do it.
You will need deodorisers as soon as you hit a slime biome.

All the above is to minimize CO2 and heat production and preserve water.
If I don't find gas, I skip that step and dig straight down until I hit oil, then pump it up and start making plastic. I like to hit oil by day 35-40. Build a gold pump in the oil, then use door locks to keep your dupes from wandering in; it's easy to die from scalding before you have suits.

Somewhere around here I make a metal refinery. Often I use polluted water from bathrooms as the coolant, get it nice and hot then store it in water resevoirs until I can dump it in a steam chamber later. No point in building all the water purifying infrastructure yet.

I prefer to make many small circuits from normal wire. Only on machines like the metal refinery that overload normal wires do I use conductive wires.

At this point, I start making plastic ladders and climbing to space. I cut a hole to space, then pump CO2 from the bottom out in to space. I like to hit this point by day 100.
Once you hit space, you can start shove vole farming, if you look up how that's done.

Usually I'll still be on the first or second of my ~4 starting water resevoirs by this point.
Now you can start flushing out the base. Proper bathrooms, a mess hall, water purification, more automated power systems, medical, food storage and all that stuff.

You can avoid a lot of base ending problems by not putting industrial or power buildings near your living/farming areas, and not producing much CO2 before you can pump it in to space. All that time on manual generators will help with running speed getting up and down those ladders, too.

In the base game it almost doesn't matter. The asteroid is so big room is never an issue. But until you get to sustainable levels of food, water, pollution management and most especially temperature, you usually do not have the luxury of design. Certain parts of the base have largely accepted ways of doing things that are considered among the best ways to do them, like with SPOMs, rocket fuel, automated facilities and volcano taming. But its hard to follow another full base design from the start of the game because the surrounding biomes will differ from game-to-game and drilling into a boiling biome at the start of the game to build the bathroom in the place shown in the screen shot you're looking at would spell certain death.

The real path forward in ONI is figuring out how to deal with the problems, and its not very sympathetic to letting you figure it out any other way. The dupes almost feel like they are programmed to constantly search for any weakness in the base to exploit or anywhere to get themselves stuck, so you are constantly tweaking and fixing things to clean up mess after mess on your path forward.

You have enough time to research farming tile. You need to farm Mealwood for the starting part of your game. You need to dig enough to make sure you have enough seeds for farming Mealwood. Digging more gives you the chance to find Muckroot too. You are given enough Dirt for your Mealwood maybe around 1000 cycles depending on the map and the number of your Dupes.

For better food, Omelette and Barbeque, you need to switch to ranching. Keep an eye on new coming dupes with ranching ability. Research ranching so you can have Hatch and Drecko farms. You can see the ranching setup plus farming setup in my screenshot:

https://steamcommunity.com/id/Moky5679/screenshot/2110556596713265214/

Drecko Farm is a little harder to set up because you need hydrogen for Drecko scaling which is not necessary if you are farming them for only food. Here: (https://oxygennotincluded.fandom.com/wiki/Guide/Self-Powering_Oxygen_Machine) is a good guide for how to make hydrogen out of a Self-Powering Oxygen Machine (SPOM) and you will find a way to get enough hydrogen for your Drecko Farm. If you are lucky you can find enough hydrogen around your base. You just need to move the hydrogen from the source to your Drecko Farm.

For oxygen, you need a couple of Oxygen Diffusers which each needs Algae to function. Each Oxygen DIffuser is enough for 5 Dupes given the fact that each Oxygen Diffuser produces 500 g/s of oxygen and each Dupe consumes 100 g/s of oxygen. You at least need two Oxygen Diffusers in the initial part of your game because you dig a lot and oxygen diffuses to the area that you dig.

You can play a few hundred cycles given this setup. You will soon, after a few hundred cycles, run out of Alge and water so you have to find a way to make oxygen.

I think this is good for the initial part of the game and I hope you can enjoy the game.

=WHAT?????

.......... U ALREADY KNOW THAT SAND TILES CAN GO DOWN, RIGHT????SO WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO MAKE SOME SAND TO FALL ONTO FLOWER POT AFTER U'LL DIF THE TILE WHAT'S BENEATH IT AND HOLDING FROM FALLING???

=THEN U'LL JUST MAKE A ROOM LIKE THAT WHERE THERES ONLY YOUR TILE WITH ENTOMBED FLOWER POT THAT PIP CAN PLANT ON, PLACE A PIP THERE, AND JUST DELIVER THE SEED U WANT........... SO PIP WILL PLANT IT, AND OK

.................AND IF U'LL CLICK ON A FLOWER POT, U'LL SEE A COPY SETTINGS SO U'LL JUST SPREAD THE SETTING OVER OTHER FLOWER POTS

............. AND IF U'LL WANT TO DO ANOTHER PLANT, JUST UPROOT , DO NOT DESTROY THE ENTOMBMENT, AND.............. TAKE AWAY FROM ROOM BRING ANOTHER.......... AND OK , BY OTHER WORDS THAT DOES MEAN THAT ENTOMBED FLOWER POT IS REUSABLE

=..................... BUT DONT WORRY, IT WORKS ONLY FOR SOLID FERTILIZER............. OK???????????........ SOOOO ANYTHING THAT USES LIQUID FERTILIZER, WILL NOT GROW, THOUGH

=PRETTY SIMPLE ENOUGH, AS FOR ME..............
