Since you asked the question, I'll assume you don't have any, so I'll add this...
If you find yourself digging into areas you're not quite ready for, like the oil biome, because you don't yet have enough Refined Metal for Atmo Suits (trust me I've been there many times,) then you really want to build a Hospital first, or at the bare minimum a bunch of Triage Cots, otherwise you might start to lose dupes left right and center.
See, dupes aren't that smart. They're quite stupid really, and will run back into a scorching area to complete a job, or pick up a material, even when they're a c-hair away from death. And if you haven't built a door which you can restrict access to, you'll have a hard time keeping track of, and controlling them. And if there isn't a free Triage Cot for them to go and heal, you'll potentially end up with every dupe near death, which complicates things.
So do yourself a favour and build that Hospital sooner rather than later, and work on getting Atmo Suits asap.
You could also breed some Smooth Hatches, which will get you Refined Metal less inefficiently than a Rock Crusher.
Smoothies are 75% efficient, so more efficient than the 50% from crushers, less efficient than 100% from refineries.
Don't forget the cost of feeding Stone Hatches metal ore that won't be refined. I like Smoothies too, but there's an entry level cost before you get the first one.
You can be patient too, eventually you will get your first smooth egg without feeding a stone hatch any metal.
So 50 cycles sounds about right to me as well. Feeding Stone Hatches some metal ore will speed things up, but it's not necessary.
Just use rock crusher and don't worry.
ONI is a game about optimization. So...yes! :)
