There are some builds specifically around drowning branches so they constantly regrow to maximize that (but that means no lumber).
So every branch grow cycle there is a 5% chance of a seed.
Seems odd. I've had 3 pips in a ranch with a tree. Over 200 cycles and not 1 seed.
Am I unlucky or does the branches need to be havested to start the chance again? Pips eating doesn't restart the chance I take it. Because in 200 cycles not 1 seed.
Maybe I'm just unlucky. Never know I guess.
Thanks.
(Um, why wouldn't you want to harvest Arbor tree lumber? Having some ethanol can be handy even if you don't want to send it to a Petrol Generator....)
You need to feed the ranched pips or the die.
You need 3 wild trees per stable of pips, but you are free to harvest the branches without the pips running out of food.
The branches never grow to harvest them. The pip nibble on them first.
I didn't think a pip ate anything but Arbor trees. Didn't think the ate reed plants. I'll have to look. But I don't think so unless they changed it. Which of course they could have, and I missed it.

You ought to be able to fit at least 10 trees or thimble reeds into a 24 x 4 ranch, which will provide a surplus of lumber (or reed fibers) even with the pips eating some growth.
