Tubes not really that fast...?
So when I played the game before, i didn't build a tube transit system until super late. At that point i had like 12 dupes with a really high athleticism, and it didn't seem like they go much slower on a ladder than in a tube. Coupled with the high energy cost, it didn't seem worth it.

Is this still the case, or have they rebalanced things? Anyone have experiences markedly similar/different?

From my experience, Tubes are not more effecient for downward movement compared to a fire pole, or a horizontal movement compared to plastic when looking at high athletic dupes.

It is convenient however to get in and out of areas you want completely sealed off, or for new duplicants that are slower with/without atmosuits.

And as I've found out, the energy cost isnt actually all that bad, seems more like one time draw per pull, vs something like the arcade which is a high pull for X amount of seconds.
(i could be wrong here)

I personally enjoy the luxury of the transit system, esp for new dupes.
But it really isnt as fast as a maxed out athletic dupe in most if not all cases.

yep they should make it a bit faster....dupe on metal block run faster then tubes:steambored:

It depends. A few bases ago I built a facility on the surface without an entrance. The only way in or out was by transit, and dupes ciould travel from my base far below to this facility without having to use suits, work there all day and take the tube back in the evening. It worked great. But then I got some trouble with the bunkers etc on the top so that a dupe got killed, and haven't tried it since. Ventilation was also a challenge at first. But this works, and obviously saves a lot of time in the suits. And there is no reason why you couldn't do it other places the map. I originally wanted to make a sealed set of flats for new dupes with transit access only, but this I decided was not worth the cost or effort of setting it up. But small enclosed spaces for specialized work with tube access are certainly viable. The surface is the most obvious one though.

tube is a very good airlock replacement (if I could built it downward in the station it would be even better.
the bad thing is it too slow ,only faster when going up...and if you hae some turning point in the tube it will slow down a lot,it only profitable if you keep the tube in a straight line...,I only using it to go up and down skiping few layer of floor....it would be better if they are faster so I don't have to adjust my base, keeping the tube in straight line.

Like the others I don't build transit tubes for ... transportation, I build them as posh airlocks once i have lots of excess power :p

I'm using tubes as an elevator and I don't see much differences between them and plastic ladder with high athletic dupes. Personnaly, I would add a morale boost to dupes that use them.

Tubes are good for say, frequent transports from the bottom world to the surface, even with high athletics, it sure beats climbing a hundred ladders. Still, its not as worth it to do in the middle of a tight base, since every turn slows it down a little bit, where it'd be cheaper and not all that slower to just walk from the barracks to the toilet.
