End Goal?

Is There an actual end goal to this game or is it to just see how long you can last and how much cool stuff you can build.

There are two endings. One where you have to launch a rocket to a location on the star map. The other is to build a great monument using a massive amount of materials.

Note that those two achievements don't "end" the game, they are things that are done after the game has developed a lot.

"or is it to just see ..." I think the word "just" there takes away from what makes the game great. Have you ever had a *great* meal and felt the purpose was to put away the last bite of dessert so you could drop the fork and shout "FIRST!" The journey, mate ...

I have not tried DF but yes, ONI is a great game for making your own goals or placing your own restrictions on yourself :)
