I feel like this game has made me smarter.
I've never really gotten this type of enjoyment from a game before. It is definitely a different itch being scratched.

I can strongly agree with that. lol I do take calculus based physics next semester, so then I'll be even betterer! LOL

Me watching my friend play
My friend "Ooh! I just found oil! *mouses over* WTF! Co2?! I thought Co2 as a gas. Is this a bug?"

Me "Everything can be everything, its called state change, like you can make Gold a gas"

Friend "Hah, that's dumb. They couldn't just put a cap?"

Me "This is real life, if you heat Gold enough, it will eventually become a gas. They are simulating actual things that happen."

Friend " *confused laugh* what? No way!"

Yep, makes think wider and rewards for it. Gives game of managing additional flavour.

That is a really bad example because liquid CO2 cannot exist under normal atmospheric conditions. You might have heard of "dry ice", which is called that because it's a solid that turns straight into a gas.

Liquid CO2 can only exist in ONI because Klei are completely ignorant of the concept of pressure.

Cool, see
My friend learned that most things can state change, and I just learned about that state changes can skip steps.

I knew atmosphere affected temperatures of state changes, but never knew any examples of straight up skipping. I've even worked with dry ice before and didn't realize it.

You want to REALLY blow you mind consider that gas, liquid and solid arent the only states. There are also plasma and superfluid states as well, and more

Superfluids makes my head hurt, like when my dad explained to me how steam in a coal power plant can be both a liquid and a gas at the same time in the heating pipes.

This game is very realistic in somethings, while other things it completely breaks the laws if physics. While it would really cool if it took ALL the correct real world laws into account, it would make the game much harder. Not to mention the huge amount of extra processing power it would require.

They're not "ignorant of the concept of pressure", they're constrained by the game engine, and obviously made a design decision to not be a 100% life simulation, and just went with what works in the context of the game. Key word being GAME. Like hoe submerging electrical equipment in the game doesn't electrocute the dupes.
If you want realism, get a degree in science. If you want fun, play the GAME ONI.

It scratches the "build stuff" itch that I've always had. That's why I love games like this, and Factorio, etc - it's a different mental skillset than other games. I won't say playing shooters is "dumb", it's just different skills. I love to make stuff, always have, from legos and HO trains as a kid (nerd cred!) to games like this, Factorio, Cities:Skylines, Planet Coaster, etc. It definitely needs different parts of the brain than other games!

I think messing with heat generation and state changes adds to the feeling alot. Builder games make good use of some unapparent twist thats not directly rolls into managing placement or supply chain. Makes mind float a bit in a good way.

Meanwhile I've been staring at the screen for 30 mins trying to figure out why my idiot dupes won't load atmo suits into a loader thats NOT SET ON MANUAL USE?!?!?!

Sometimes this game makes me feel very dumb -_-

I admit i was slightly confused when i found Crude Oil as solid tiles. xD

Then i was like "oh right i am playing on Rime it froze"

But still can oil freeze like that irl in such temperatures? I think it needs to be way lower for it to happen.

Yes, crude oil can freeze. More precisely, parts of the mixture freeze and form waxy crystals which prevent the rest from flowing, which is called the gel or pour point temperature.

-40 C will freeze gasoline, diesel, most motor oils, heating oil, etc.
