You use the machine called "Water Purifier" wich can be unlocked via the research called "Filtration". More info here: https://oxygennotincluded.gamepedia.com/Water_Purifier

You can also boil Polluted Water, producing Steam and Dirt. Cool the Steam back down and it will be clean Water.

I can tell you what does not work: I had a huge area with water. Some of it was polluted. My guys kept using it as cooking water. So, I thought I'd build a water purifier, and pump the water back into the revene after it was purified. That way the entire "ocean"' of water did not have to be moved. I thought over time, the water would get cleaner and cleaner.

It never worked. The poluted water stayed polluted no matter how many cycles you keep it going.

pretty sure this is because the tiles of polluted water will not move or dilute into the clean stuff, so unless your pump in literally right on top of the polluted water it will not be cleaned.

Interestingly you can actually mop a node of polluted water out of a clean water pool. This behaviour will probably change when the new update comes. Just be careful because they can just keep mopping up your entire water pool if you dont pay attention.

It would work, but you'd have to have a pretty substantial flow of water to make it work. You'd also have to ensure that your return flow to the resevoir is on the opposite side from the outgoing pumps.

And even then, that's no guarantee you'll get all of the P-H2O. You will likely end up with a small pocket of P-H2O.

Water purifiers aren't an effective use of polluted water, really. They require sand (near-finite resource) and produce polluted dirt, which will stink up your base if you leave the purifier in an open room. It also produces a lot of heat (20W)

The clean water in the sandstone biome will last you enough time to get a system set up to siphon water from a geyser, which is infinite.

Polluted water is better used in a fertilizer maker, as irrigation for mealwood and peppers, or just mopped if you don't want to deal with it.
