Yes, decentralising works great. But it takes a lot of work in the organisation of stocks. You need a bit of everything in all your areas.
It also induces a very typical playstyle. I pause very often and have things beeing constructed at bottom, middle and top of my base.
But the living pods can also be used permanently for some specific workers like scientist, engineers, cook, farmer... and you can move your architects around depending on where you are building new stuff. You will then need spare accomodations in all your areas.
