What do the Expressive Symbols Mean?
I now have all sorts of bubbles with expressions. I have no context as to their meaning and no log to review at length to understand them. I have no control over how long they are displayed. No tool tips to explain them.

It isn't rocket science, I can tell you that much.

Agreed they display too quickly and most times I'm zoomed out and can barely make them out.

When I have zoomed in and watch a couple they basically follow some simple patterns. Many are just like ladders..? Ladders..? Yeah, Ladders..!! Oh, Ladders..!! Yes I like them..! Me too..!! Or that occasional Hey there _____..!! Well Hi, how are you..? Good and you..? Great..! Well back to work..! Not exactly the penultimate of conversation, but somewhat amusing at times. And "cute" from what I gather from reading around Al Gore's interwebs.

Just another something to explore and eventually ignore for me... Though I have to temper that with the fact that every game there's usually one scene I happen to catch that makes my day, so I can't say the whole thing is worthless...

Someone far smarter and more observant than I will have them all in the wiki soon enough. Then we'll both know. Or if I dig a little more there may even be a list...

Cheers..!

Ok.. So yes I can figure out the conversation. But what's the meaning of having the conversation at all? How does it influence my Dupes or the environment? Other than making them stall to have a chat and wasting otherwise productive time..I really only need them expressing things 'to me' so I can address their needs. I don't really want them to talk to each other unless there is a measurable benifit to my colony.

Each Pleasant Chitchat basically reduces Stress by 0,5 (-5% for 60s), Appreciated substracts another 0,5% (chat to someone who works).

By the by, no one ever said that this whole new system/update is made to make things more easy, it's made to make things more authentic. Anyone who is against that should experience a work for once where chatting is not allowed, everything has to be done in silence and breaks? Are a waste!

Realistic? Genetic 3D printouts of humanoid cartoons, stuck in an asteroid for reasons unknown, without any lore to explin their own culture, dedicated to achieveing nothing other than continued existance.

Early access.. yeah I know. Starting to wish I hadn't bothered trying this out yet. Ive paid yet again to be someones beta tester on a game that is becoming less appealing.

Mark Watney, Solo 550 cycles, with minimal coms, and only one directive.
Vastly more realistic.

Of course, this always has to happen...

when "authentic" is used, it gets turned into "realistic" for some inexplicable reason

and for some even more inexplicable reason, trying to be more authentic (and realistic), having more details is somehow bad just because it does not make the game more "easy". Ironically it is not like it makes the game more about micro-management which one could object to.

Next thing is probably having dupes sleep no more, even though sleeping time is already cut quite short. And how dare they to eat&pee!? Oh and breath, the heresy... well, ain't anybody pity you.

Why can't the authenticity go all the way and allow work while being expressive. Its the pausing activity in favor of wasting time to be expressive that's most annoying off thet op. What reason is there to be expressive and stop working? Lot's of folks chat/whistle while they work just fine. To the annoyance of their co-workers.

Again someone far more into this game than me is going to have to break it down and explain the bennifits. Because so far it's a net negative to my enjoyment.

It's not cute or funny. It not appearing to show me the value in it.

Yep. I have never had the urge to talk to a coworker. Never felt the need to let anyone know they did a good job. Or that they truly suck at this and should go find another job that maybe isn't EA beta tester.

They humanized the dupes and gave them some of the things that make them peoples and not machines.

I don't agree with all of it either, I feel some of the stress stuff is too harsh and constricting. I think the amount of babysitting involved is a bit excessive and detracts from the flow of the game as it was before.

But... I have no problem with a game that makes characters interact or be more "person like" as opposed to Mr. Roboto.

I genuinely feel sorry for people that don't find the value in that.

Cheers..!

Half the time the argument is for realism because it adds authenticy to a game.
The other half of the time the argument is for simplified abstraction because it's just a game.

At the end of the day both arguments are meaningless. ONI is a game, and design decisions follow the basic principles of game design and the vision the developers have for the final product.

It is clear that their vision includes the dupes acting more like people and less like machines.

FTFY (like seriously I said authentic, somebody thinks I meant realistic, I underline that I meant authentic in the other direction, details which translate into liveliness.

and that's exactly what the Klei wants, like you said, that much is fairly obvious indeed considering the animated shorts and how cutes are made so dupe, er, the other way round.
The dupes are made to be human.

Funnily enough, dupes actually do not stop working for a chat, if one is working it is treated as a different kind of chat. The chitchat one basically wants to deny here is like denying coworkers meeting in a hallway, greeting each other, sharing a very short chat and daring to stop walking.

Gotta say, this update is way less impactful than one would think. At least when it comes to dupes and stress.

Rooms with decor are the key, pacing jobs is another.

No longer are we on easy mode where we can just send a dupe into the lava zone without protection and they are fine with it!

But really, build rooms and decorate them. It's stuff I did since I bought the game, now I just need to do it a few cycles earlier. No biggie.

I just picture this WHOLE conversation as a series of the graphic little chat bubbles and it all just seems to make sense to me. :P

Holds up a bubble with a dupe and a ?...

Do you truly think Mark Watney was mentally fine after surviving on Mars alone and in a constant state of "anything could kill me at any time"?

Anyways, conversations make the dupes more realistic and adds to the game. Updates aren't meant to make it easier, in my opinion they tend to make it more complicated and require you to think about your choices even more than you already were. Unless you wanted robot-like dupes?

There comes a point of over complicated and diminishing returns. Add something for complexity and not a deeper enjoyment of having to manage it, edges more to that point. This is a reason I tend to avoid EA games. Once its complete and far reaching dramatic changes are few and very far between, its just a matter of getting to learn it all in the context of one stable reality.
