How are you sustaining your sage hatches + coal generators?
What are you all feeding your sage hatches, that can be sustained over time, and keep your coal generators fed during average cycles?

Dirt = finite. The amount of acrobatics to convert to dirt, and such a small return on investment, is a turn off...meh.

Food = insufficient. Sage hatches don't consume enough kcal of it to produce generator-sustaining levels of coal.

I might revert back to standard hatches and feed them clay. I also have a P. Oxygen geyser...maybe a process with distillers > pacu > p.dirt > dirt.

Why would you want sage hatches when stone hatches eat infinite minerals like igneous rock?

How do I feed my coal generators? Well, simply by having them after natural gas in the priority list so they are not on much.
Yes that's what I'm currently doing. Sorry, forgot to mention the stone hatches.

I was looking for a way to add the sage hatches into the mix, in a practical way.

Feed them mushrooms then. Slime has little other use once your dupes have better food.

Coal Generator is a noob killer and you shouldn't use it as main power unless you want to lose. Use it only as a support until you find a gas generator.

Its a primary source of CO2 for your slicksters.
I have a gas generator setup, but there also needs to be a backup to that system, to account for periods of dormancy.

That can be another gas geyser, if you have one, or some other energy generation system. For now, I choose to use coal generators, especially when given the fact that I'm raising hatches. As AbsynthMinded indicates, that process can be a benefit to other ecosystems.

The problem with food is the hatch kcal to kg coal output is very low, compared to other resources, such as dirt.
Well, I have a big "room" only to keep 20kilos of natural gas a tile so the geysers are nicely drained

I don't sustain my sage hatches because they are worse than regular hatches. Coal I get from about 24 tame stone hatches and endless normal ones that live iny my basement. I gave up counting them at about 75.
At real atm most generators are anigilating stuff, like coal gen has to produce waste and CO2, but he only gives C02. So at real its all kind of sustainble but stm game is all u can is pray on gaysers.
Hmmm...I suppose sage hatches have a place if you're overflowing with food (which I am at, about 1M Kcal), and have enough sage hatches eating, to hit the coal output mark for breaking even or better.

For now I'll just work on getting normal hatches to work through my clay reserves.

You don’t have to feed Sage Hatches regular food. They can be fed Dirt, Slime, Algae, Fertilizer, and Polluted Dirt.

You could set up Morb->Puft->Sage Hatch feeding chain, providing you with Eggs, Meat, and Coal from nothing.

The problem with this is that the things they eat are as valuable as the coal, if not more. So to me this would be a rather pointless cycle when you could get all those things in more effiicient ways by ranching other critters instead.

Depends on what you are doing with the Slime really. I never grow Mushrooms so it has a more limited use for me.

You can turn it into algae and feed fish for as much meat as you could ever need. No matter how I turn this around in my head, sage hatches are still completely useless. I suggested on the Klei forums that they add plant seeds to their diet. Or that they poop algae instead of coal or something. If they do any of that I'll breed tons of them.
When compared to stone hatches and even regular hatches, who both eat some form of what is realistically garbage in return for coal, I see zero reason to breed sage hatches. In fact they are so bad that they confused me at first. Surely there had to be some intended purpose to them? But I haven't found it. They exclusively eat things I have better uses for. Several in some cases. And in return for exactly the same thing I can get from stone hatches or regular hatches, who eat garbage.

I mean, now that I think about it they still confuse me. What is the thinkling here? It's just weird. Anyway, pretty sure they'll see some changes in the near future. Because I don't think even 10% of the player base is bothering with them atm, judging by various forum discussions and posts I have read. And in my opinion those 10% haven't thought things through fully.

Well the purpose of the Sage Hatch is that the conversion rate of material to coal is 100% unlike the normal and stone varieties only making a 50% conversion. Sages produce coal at a higher rate per critter/space available.
