If you really did not set morale expectations too high and if what you describe is true, then 2% to 98% in a matter of seconds is of course impossible. Standard settings cap the penalty at +25% per cycle. Likewise Morale dropping to 1 or 0 should also be impossible that late in the game. Both are obviously bugs and need to be reported properly by presenting your save game at least if you want to have a solution formulated.
Apart from the save game, a full reinstall, system specs and starting a new colony might be required if the save game works properly on other systems or if it does not either.
A great hall needs tables at least and if one were to focus decor in a small rec room, one needs less decor and have more space for it as well (since one just needs a water cooler).
Low ceiling by the by for full range of sculptures plus ceiling bonus. I achieved easy 642 with that alone in the center. 360 from sculptures (15), 270 from metal tiles (7 ceiling, 5 floor), 12 Water Cooler. Add creatures and snazzy suits (practically +35 each) and you can go infinite. Mind you, Dupe's eyes are on their bottom, proving that they are indeed aliens which pretend to be little humans.
Decor doesn't matter because those +12 morale can turn into a +6 or a +0 for reasons you have no control over and those +12 decor morale doesn't even come from the recroom entirely, it gets averaged over a cycle and your dupes don't even go to the recroom for the full downtime duration.
Once you have that get the Meal Preparation tech then put your water cooler and however many mess tables you need into a single (large) room. That will get you +3 until you can add a painting or statue. Then it upgrades to great hall and gives +6. With the great hall you should be good for going into tier 3 jobs.
For tier 4 upgrade the latrines to sinks and lavatories for another +1. Get a jukebox for +2 (high power cost). Spread decoration around. Maybe switch to bristle/gristle berries. That opens up all the necessary jobs to be functional.
Decorate the hell out of everything and get higher quality food to push your morale for the top end jobs. If you can swing quality 5 food you can do pretty much anything without sweating morale since it gives 16 morale on its own. With +6 for the great hall you top the 20 for tier 6. High decor also scales exponentially with 120 average over the day giving double digit morale.
I think if they have a job preference and they are doing that job they should be happy and have high morale.
I never said that one should not have a great hall or mess hall but you are trying to say that dupes should just stay in the great hall when there is no merit.
At least I'd have understood you if you were to claim that it is better to decorate the great hall first but geez Louise, if your ability to communicate is bad, at least do not act that badly.
Did you also know that it is not just about average but decor increments slowly and decreases even more slowly? Making high decor last quite a while and making overkill to a certain extend plausible.
Would I build a great hall with all rec items but one? You can bet on that.
Will I even try to decorate and metalize it? Of course.
But is there any space for decor? Well, if I stretch the room way too far to be any practical, so no, 300-400 max, with most comming from low gold metal tiles.
Bluff Briar, one has enough to place near cots and at research stations+manual generators. Needless to say, Debris is a big demerit (make someone sweep indeed) while snazzy suits basically add +3 Morale at least (since they effectively add +35 decor). Several Water Coolers have no merit, they at best decrease traveling time.
Which the OP is obviously lacking.
A recroom has no benefits. None.
Your sudden ramblings on how much you decorate your recroom only serve to mislead.
Trying to fit in "Irritable Bowel" dupes has been more annoying, as they need an earlier scheduled start for downtime, to match up with other dupes.
I haven't bothered much with decoration, other than in "terrible decor" zones, and the barracks. It seems to have worked itself out.
I see, you basically only serve to misinform. Duplicants will use Rec Buildings only when they need them, that is but a matter of fact. Before Recreation (where the priority is from high to low) they will eat if at sub 3300kcal and go to the bathroom if above 40% Bladder. Again: They do not use a building if they still have the buff and especially the buff for Arcade Machines and Jukebots lasts over 3 cycles. Your inability to comprehend that or the merit of focused decor is beyond sad.
