Must be in space?
I thought we could use Shine Bugs on Solar Panels but in the description it says "Must be exposed to space." I only have a bunch Shine bugs and working towards making a room for it. I don't want to waste my time. Does it only work in space?

You can place 5 solar panels around one criter lure and if you have there ~200 shine bugs it will produce ~1800W. It is quite a lot of constant power. I was using such shine bug solar farm successfully for more than 1000 cycles in my last colony.

The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

SShine bugs and solar panels is not worth it. I had two panels and a full room of bugs and got like 7KW on each one. It works, but is utterly poinless. Maybe if ou have 1000 bugs in the same place. But a coal generator would still give you more power.

Full room? How many exactly?

As I wrote 200 is enough to get 1800W.
Also you can refer to mikek screenshot - it shows solar panel generating 330W. So why you are saying such things?

40 or so. Also, this depends on how many are shining on the solar panels. And my output with those 40 were nowhere near the number you just stated. Not even close.

It 'works' but a more sensible method of generating power with critters is just using Hatches...

hundreds of shinebugs all close together looks awful, probably impacts most people's computer performance and solar panels are big bulky ugly things too.

Hatches produce power far more efficiently per hatch, provide meat and get rid of the 10000tons of useless rock you'll end up with. Coal generators also give useful CO2 and aren't big monstrosities like the solar panels.

pretty sure power output got nerfed with the shinebugs as the source but I can say the solar panel definitely still works inside the base/asteroid as of QoL update

...just a miss leading with that description that says "Must be exposed to space." I'm going to pretend it's talking about the "space" in a room full of shine bugs. :steamhappy:

I think that Klei developers just forgot that you can generate enough light using shine bugs. Solar panel requires a bright light, which sunlight in space exposure is providing, so probably that is why the put that description to the panels.

I'm late to the party....

But by exposed to space they mean no blocks in the way to space.

You could tunnel a hole from top to bottom and have the solar pannel work just fine.

Edit: glass does not block sunlight.
