How do you make individual rooms on top of each other?
So I've got a room. I build a ladder up into another space. The thing is, the top of the ladder prevents the once closed room below from being a closed room. This generally results in both spaces not being considered a room. I mean side by side rooms are easy. Just build a door, and tile off any other spaces to separate them. But I'm having trouble with top and bottom rooms. So far the only thing that I find works, is splitting the above room by putting doors on either side of the ladder opening. But that's not really ideal.

Making main ladder pathways are very ideal. But if you insist on building a ladder into a single room, you could turn the doorway sideways. I think it is the 'O' key to turn the door. The dupe can jump one tile into the room.

EDIT: Since the door is two tiles wide now, unless you put a ladder under both sides, the dup will only be able to jump onto the side you put the ladder on.

From what I see most experienced players have a main ladder with rooms off to either side. Making a centralized ladder and also removing one tile to either side of the central ladder has the added advantages of very good airflow and room for future expansion with fire poles and/or transit tubes.

But if you absolutely must have a ladder in the middle of what you want to be a room (there are good reasons in some cases), as WillieSea says, use a door on it's side. There's also a mod I've seen in Workshop (not used, YMMV) that's a 1 tile tall door for exactly this purpose.

Image (not mine) is similar to my set up:

don't use 2 tile gaps but use 3 tiles gaps.

so:
floor- nothing - ladder - nothing - floor

now there is enough space to build a fire pole next to the ladder, and you have a free collumn to do whatever you like with it, i personally place my air/water piping there.

another thing i do is:

when you start figure out how much space you have on both sides of the printing pod.
basically 16 width (18 with walls) on both side should be a good number to aim at. then you need 3 more spaces on both sides for the ladders/etc.

you can then simply make the printing oid room like 10 tiles or so, and every room below or above the same, those can be used for rooms like recreation, messhal, medic bay, massage if you ever need it. I like to use the printingpod room for recreation so they can hang out there after they eat. (free morale points from printing pod)
