Sage Hatch stables
I'd prefer not to give these guys polluted dirt because I use it primarily to make regular dirt.

But one thing I noticed is if you give hatches regular food they only give you a minimal amount of coal, even though it has a lot of calories.

I know sage hatches give 100% return on their food, so I dont want to miss that opportunity.

What are the best options for this?

I believe the best options for "most" people is raise them til you get stone hatches, then use igneous rock.

I actually prefer to use dirt/polluted dirt as I often has a pretty big pip farm along with plenty of water sieves.

That said, I dont usually use much to feed them as I dont often use coal for power except in emergencies, so running out of dirt is unlikely.

I guesstimate I'll need like 50 tons of steel to finish the game out. So that means refined carbon, and I'll still need coal in that case.

I've got a mega chamber of CO2 with 300k+ per tile, so I suppose I could turn that into Pwater. My 5 slickster farms in there arent eating it fast enough.

I mostly just feed Sage Hatches the Meal Lice from MealWood plants in my Drecko Ranches...Since otherwise it just rots.
Dont need a lot of Sage Hatches to cover that though...Like maybe 3 or 4 of them...

The point of feeding a Sage Hatch polluted dirt is actually pretty simple though...Since Pdirt carries germs when its converted into dirt...That germy dirt then makes germy food which can cause sickness in Dupes with the germ debuff.

So feeding Sages the Pdirt means there is no germy dirt...This is a good use of it till you can stop using food that needs dirt....After that if you still use mealwood its for Drecko's.
I'm not sure of what else to do with them after that...

I used the latrine for about 25 tons of Pdirt though...So that was a crazy amount of it off gassing plus enough to feed a lot of Sage Hatches for a while.

I keep about 8 Ranches right now of Hatches...
Got 3 Ranches of Stone, 1 of those ranches is being fed Gold Amalgum to force them to become Smooth...Cause I would rather the Hatches did the work for making Iron.

Getting enough coal together for power and refined carbon is pretty easy through Hatch Ranching. I've got gobs of coal.

The amount of coal they excrete is related to how much mass of the food they consume, not the calories. Hover your mouse over the food section in their info panel to see how much mass of each food they consume.

Sage hatches are a good alternative to pokeshells for getting rid of composts.

Sage hatches we’re the original recycle of material before anything else. They turn useless food at a 90-95% ratio which is the highest compared to others. The downside is they eat much slower than others.

This type of critter was made getting more out of the ratio compared to others while getting meat also.

It fell out of favor when the vole and pokeshell was added.

Hmmm...I almost always jump to lavatories rather then latrines. Maybe thats why I'm always behind on Pdirt.
