what is the best way to turn off lamps?
I built a bunch of lamps thinking it would help my dupes sleep but evidently these are not turned on and off by the dupes. Now they are not sleeping well because of the lamps. How are you supposed to get them to turn them off when they sleep?

thanks

While the posts above are correct, just deconstruct them. They don't serve too much purpose except for a slight decor buff and there are better options for that. Don't be afraid to deconstruct things; you'll get your resources back.

I agree with this. While you could set up a motion sensor to turn the lights off when a Dupe enters the room, it's really pointless because Dupes generally only enter bedrooms to sleep. So unless you just like the idea of seeing them turn the lights off before bed lol, deconstruct them.

Motion sensor ---» NOT gate ---» Lamp
So when a dupe is in range, it should turn off

Move the lamp to their work area. Hampster wheel is best. Their barracks should remain dark. No purpose for lighting.

What is the purpose for light in case of manual generators?

dupes get a speed boost when working in light

But does it affect manual generator in any way?

Dupes are 10% faster in any task while in lighting. So all the refining buildings, the hampster wheel, and any task where there is a charging bar.

No it doesn't. Dupes ARE NOT 10% faster in any task with lighting.

Lights don't impact everything.

Manual Gens always produce 400W no matter what. And thats goes for slow Dupes vs fast Dupes. Always 400W.

So what 10% means for manual generator? That it will produce 440W? Have you actually ever observed it to produce 10% more?

Lit workspace buff applies only to tasks that have a progress bar like using lavatory, shower or metal refinery. Also when dupes apply generator tune ups and there you get the biggest benefit from that 10% as applying tune-up takes the longest time of all tasks with progress bar.

Researching takes even longer but I don't recommend using lit workspace for research as your dupes will gain fewer science attribute's points.

Thanks for all the replies, but I don't understand why they would get fewer points in science?

You finish researching faster but you earn less attribute points for the Dupe(s) doing the research (since you spend less total time researching).

Personally, its not that big of a deal; I normally have the research done next to the Printing Pod (which gives off light) just for the Decor bonus.

The thing to remember is that the higher the learning, the faster the Dupe gains Attribute points. So I usually will give all my Dupes Science skills eventually so they can gain attribute points faster in whatever they do all cycle (running, cooking, whatever).
