Yes, the smart battery.

Connect the smart battery to the generator with both an electric wire and an automation wire.

Do I just need 1 smart battery ? Can I have no other batteries then?

Yeah smart battery, but so far I prefer setting the generator's battery treshold to 15-25%. So even if my dupes filled the generator to full. There wouldn't be too much waste.

You can connect as many smart batteries and generators like this as you like.

Batteries on the same circuit get charged at the same rate. I haven't built a smart battery myself, but I should think that just one would be needed.

Smart batteries' natural power loss is less than half that of normal batteries as well. So replacing all batteries with them is in your interest. Refined metals aren't that hard and that is the only advanced material needed.

Fewer batteries is better. Generators hold their fuel with no power loss so it is better to store the power in the fuel rather than batteries. It may be that you want different types of generators to have different priority though. In that case use one smart battery per generator type so you can give them different settings.
