Where do I get coal? I can't see any anywhere

Am I missing some research or something to discover coal?

just dig it spawns in large pockets all over the place its a ore just dig it out i have 112t of coal literally just dig the start biome alone has around 20t of it usually its the big black coal looking ore

Toxic biomes. The purple ones. And get a ranch going. The hatches all poop coal.

It depends on your spawn. I just played one yesterday that had tiny amounts of coal in the start biom; without coal, I couldn't get enough non-manual power to progress. If you pull back and don't see any within visible distance, you're going to have to strategize or start again.

i second the ranch, its a pretty decent way to get coal but not all hatches poop coal. the smooth hatch eats raw metal and poops out refined metal at a 1:0.75 ratio

You can mine alot of it as the guys said, but long-term hatches are the only long-term source.

thats really odd cause your guaranteed at minimum 4t in the areas around the start biome its a bug then

I found some, it was a bit of a haul to get to it but I have a coal generator humming away now.
