Egg/dupe ratio for tasty omelets
I'm throwing some numbers together to figure out how many critters I need to have enough eggs to sustain my base. Can you guys check my numbers???

A dupe needs 1000Cals/cycles, or an omlet every 2.8cycles. One critters produces .07 eggs/cycle, or 0.196eggs in 2.8 cycles. Thus, you need a little more than 5 (5.1ish) critters per dupe to sustain your base entirely on eggs.

Look right to everyone?

Have fun; hatches eat 700 kcal/day.

Yes its of stuff you dont need as food, but still.

also they need space. 16x4 room is overcrowded with 5 hatches => no eggs

With shinebugs, its a completely different matter. They only need 40 kcal Phosphorite/day, and lay eggs just as fast.

you're looking at it wrong... a room full of hatches give you energy in food in exchange for useless resources. how is this bad?

you should have seen it in the first preview build, you could easily survive on eggs alone and have free coal!

so you prefer to build excess coal generators for a couple of omelets?

I prefer to have a stockpile of coal that lasts so I don't have to go mining out the whole map for every last tile of it later on.

oh you guys are killin me... Can we focus on the ratio of dupes to livestock instead of arguing over how realistic or whether it's a good strategy?

so for 14cycles (neglecting those last 0,3cycles) we get 2.800cal from one critter

dividing the required cal amount by the cal of one omelet leaves us at:

14.000cal / 2800cal = 5

so to fully supply 1 duplicant you'll need 5 critters + 1 plant or meal (for covering those 0.3 cycles mentioned at top)

so yes your calculation was correct.

IMO its just an option when you have like 15+ dupes as the space and time required to maintain this is quite high. on the other hand its easy to assign 'cause only ranchers can do most of this job (grooming and maybe wrangling).
