Zombie Spores
I've searched the forums and online but I can't seem to find a solid way to clear zombie spores from the air/liquid.

My map had at least 6 of the Zombie spore plants and my dupes dug close enough to one that when the weight of the oil caused the terrain to crumble, spores were unleashed into the oil biome and they just keep spreading and spreading.

I tried to inject some chlorine gas into the oil biome, but the spores keep multiplying into all areas.

Is there an effective way to stop them before they escape the oil biome and spread across my base?

Thanks

plant buddy buds or introduce slimelung/food poisoning. germs will fight each other
Well, I tried to use your advice but there were complications.

As stated above, my oil biome was full of CO2 and some accidentally released zombie spores in it. I had pumped a bit of chlorine into it to see if I could kill the spores, but the chlorine just pushed the CO2 around while the spores survived inside.

I only have a single 3 wide hole in the abyssalite to my oil biome so everything is contained and separated from the rest of my base with an oil lock and astrosuits.

1) I put a storage container with 1Kg slime in the middle of oil boime.

2) Slime offgassed Polluted O2 which spread slimelung as suggested above

3) I then dumped some more chlorine gas into the biome when I noticed that the PO2 was pushing the CO2 and not necessarily killing the zombie spores

4) PO2 rose to top, Chlorine settled in middle, and CO2 stayed on the bottom

5) So, slimelung at the top of oil biome, clean chlorine in middle and zombie spores in CO2 was spread across entire oil biome as the pressure from above gases pushed down on it

6) I installed deoderizers at the top of the oil biome (just under the abyssalite shell) and it turned the PO2 into O2, but did not kill the zombie spores.

7) Now, my entire oil biome is zombie spores at the top and bottom separated by a layer of chlorine. The container of slime is now inside the chlorine layer and no longer competing for CO2 or pushing the zombie spores around

Any other ideas?

chlorine is only good for killing surface germs as airborne germs will likely move to another gas tile. plus, chlorine likely doesn't kill zombie spores as effectively as it does fp or slimelung
If anyone is curious how I finally solved my Zombie Spores issue.... it was very similar to how I handle slime biomes when I first start out the game.

First, I rolled back to a save that was 100 cycles before the initial spore release. Once it was across my entire oil biome, I could not see a reasonable way to contain it. :rshocked:

So, I built an water-locked room with a couple of gas reservoirs and liquid containers and filled it with chlorine gas. Yep... chlorine was the only thing that would efficiently kill the zombie spores.

With dupes in astro suits, I built a containment area around where the spores were in the oil biome, accessible via a mechanical door so I could close it up and create a vacuum.

Next, I installed 2 gas pumps and 2 liquid pumps (2 of each, just for speed so I would not need to wait forever... YMMV). There are 8 active sporechids on my map that I've found so far and a few that are in a vacuum waiting for me to crack it open and let CO2 in. My oil biome is a mine field.

First, pull all of the gas out of your zombie-spore containment area until you have a vacuum. The sporechids stop releasing spores in a vacuum and the spores die in a vacuum. However, the spores thrive in all of the gases you just extracted. So, send those gases to your chlorine room and store the gases in the gas reservoirs until all of the zombie spores are eliminated. Chlorine gas WILL magically penetrate the walls of the gas/liquid storage containers and the pipes leading in and out.

Now that you have a vacuum and the sporechids are no longer emitting, start pulling the spore-infested crude oil/petroleum/liquid out and send it to your liquid storage in the chlorine gas room. Wait for all zombie spores to be destroyed before you send the liquid anywhere else. Even a single zombie spore will quickly become MANY more. :rfacepalm:

I tried converting the infected crude oil to petroleum in an oil refinery and that was a terrible idea. Not only did I have infected petroleum, but the dupe operator was also in contact with the zombie spores.... AND the natural gas that the refinery put off also had zombie spores in it. Talk about pouring salt on a wound. Ouch!

Now that I understand to treat the zombie spores similarly slimelung (but with MUCH more caution), I am not nearly as intimidated by it. It just means that I will be delayed a bit longer before I can comfortably conquer space.

:tgrin:

If you create a feedback loop in the metal refinery you can quickly heat up the petroleum ( I think it adds 100 degrees every time it passes). Zombie spores only survive 290 C afaik. Just careful not to turn it into sour gas or to melt your entire operation, as this can quickly get out of hand - as I found out when I did it completely unintentionally and had petroleum on an infinite heating loop.
As for CO2 you can scrub CO2 in the caverns with a 96 tile 5 max slickster farm and a small deposit for extras. In fact it's so effective, you'll be grasping for CO2 just to keep 2-3 slicksters in a farm fed afterwards.
Another tip - you can delete gases by blocking them in diagonally from the outside. Could help with the small pockets with sporechids - haven't tried it though.
Oh and consider just using a simple insulated room with a high pressure vent and a liquid lock for quarantine gas storage. Much more efficient than gas storage containers and doesn't care about temperature, especially if you use tricks to pressurize it above the 20kg/tile that the vent maxes out at.
Not sure how helpful any of this would be, but hey.

Truth be told, I'm still trying to figure out the game, I'm on my 4th survival map at Cycle 500+ with 12 dupes and have most of the asteroid cleaned and organized, almost all slimemold is dug out, BUT I have not melted the ice biomes. I like a nice, tidy map and if I left the game alone for 100 cycles, I think everyone would be just fine.

That said, I have not built any power generation beyond a couple of coal generators and some hydrogen generators to utilize the excess hydrogen from my SPOM (I cheated a bit and looked online for a SPOM diagram).

I only use the wild sleet wheat and pepper plants and do not have an actual garden. I have 100k food at all times (mostly BBQ and buns) without trying.

I have smooth hatches refining my metal for me and I get plastic from a drek farm.

I have not made a metal, plastic or an oil refinery yet. I'm basically living in the dark ages (*heh*) In fact, yesterday was the first time I decided to make a non-survival map and use the debug mode to figure out how to do something (ie. the Zombie Spores).

I thought I would just tough it out and figure out the game 'the hard way' and not use debug.

That said, I can't exactly recommend that approach to anyone who doesn't have a LOT of spare time on their hands. The learning curve for ONI is even harsher than Kerbal or Factorio, especially if you only play survival like I've been doing.

Once I get rid of the rest of the zombie spores in my map, I plan to build my first rocket. Most of my asteroid is oxygenated and I got VERY lucky with the geysers and have more water than I'll ever need.

ONI addiction... its a heck of a drug. :-)
