Pip's seed planting mechanics

I am trying to create a wild farm.

The wiki says that Pips will plant a seed if there is maximum of 2 plants in the area: https://oxygennotincluded.gamepedia.com/Pip

However they do not want to plant a third plant in the row:

Is the wiki up to date? Or maybe the issue is that wheezeworts are 2 tiles high so it effectively counts as "4 tiles of plants"?

I've seen the decompiled code, it's 2 plants in a 6 tile radius.

"6 tile radius" is quite vague. To be honest, this thread is not helpful... :(

"6 tile radius" would mean "6 tiles in every direction" adding up to a 13x13 box the tile to check in the center. This might ignore anything outside of the room.
So they should try to plant something next to the wheezewort.

Wasn't really meant to be helpful, just showing you where the numbers come from. Dschinghis Pan gave a better description of how it works in practice.

The area it checks for existing plants (2 max or the pip won't plant) is 8 squares above but only 4 below. Its 5 squares to the left, but I think 6 squares to the right. You need to plant the plants in the upper right first, then across to the left before you move down to the next level to get the highest density planting. If you don't want t worry about what direction you are planting then you need to plant groups of 3 plants in a horizontal line 9 rows apart vertically and 7 rows apart horizontally.

Thanks. The wiki is close, but slightly incorrect. I will test it and correct the wiki.

I have also found an answer to my original question - there are wild plants outside of the farm...
