Ration Box / Sterile Environment

I've not kept up on all the changes and only recently started a new game after the launch update. I notice "Sterile Atmosphere" now only decreases food decay rate rather than completely halting it, or at least that's what the description of Sterile Environment says. What I'd like to know, however, is that if food is inside a Ration Box and the Ration Box is in a Sterile Environment will the food be counted as in a Sterile Environment or should I dump out all food inside the Ration Box to get the effect?

It will still go "stale" but won't rot. I have no idea what stale means or does though.

Thanks for the heads up. In a previous game I had a little conveyor system set up to deliver food to a little carbon hole I made next to my kitchen and Great Hall that I'm working on now. Anyone knows what the "stale" effect does?

Necro but it answers the question:

was testing some stuff and ive found that stale food causes the food to count as 1 tier lower then normal. when a duplicant eats fresh gristle berry they get a +4 morale and a Standard Meal pop up after eating while dupes that ate stale gristle berry only received a +1 morale and got a Poor Meal pop up
