It should be automatically happening, as long as you are not in sandbox mode. In sand box move the steam achievements are disabled. Can you tell us more about the issue?

I have debug enabled but I haven't been using it at all in the new game I started on release, and it's not in sandbox. I am getting the colony achievements in-game, but not the steam ones.

I think if debug/sandbox is enabled achieves won't work, have you tried without debug?

If I have to remove and replace the text file every time I switch save file it's not worth it, but I guess I can try it the next time I play to see if that is the problem. If it is I need a mod that re-enables the steam achievements when debug is enabled.

You don't. I have debug enabled and was getting Steam achievements just fine. I bounce back and forth a lot, in debug I use instabuild, when you go back to your other save for whatever reason instabuild is still on. I'm pretty sure this happened and I didn't realize it. I looked earlier and didn't have recent one's I got in game. Look at my profile and you'll see achievements. I've had debug_enable.txt in place since EA before there were achievements. So you probably had the same happen as I did. FWIW I did popst about it to the Klei forums but don't think there's been any responses yet. Could also be a bug but it's not because of the enable file, I know that for sure.

I don't have any mods and installed the game for the first time on release, and I never touched any of the files, and I got steam achievements just fine. If I were you I'd just quickly fire up some new colony and do one of the super fast achieves like get a cot and toilet for every dupe and see if it pops, it could take as short as a couple of minutes.

That sounds plausible. So if anyone knows how to mod to re-enable steam achievements please let me know.

was watching his playthrough at 11:00 he talks about how if you have debug mode enabled you can't get steam achievements

I tested it and having it enabled is fine, but if you load a map having quickbuild enabled from a previous one it doesn't matter if you disable it without doing anything, it's too late. This really sucks because there is no warning or anything that achievements will be disabled.

Cheat modes should be auto disabled when loading a new map although I really don't understand why there are harder rules for steam achievement than the in-game ones. Especially since I'm sure you can still mod, memory edit and share save files without disabling steam achievements.

Personally I can care less about Steam achievements, they literally mean less than nothing to me. But yes, debug mode should be saved in the save file and not be a global thing. Feel free to find my post on Klei's forum and add your thoughts there.
